Preview: We are fast approaching 25 years since Aston Villa last inflicted a Premier League defeat on Manchester United at Villa Park. The recent form of the two sides tells us not to expect that elusive win to materialise on Thursday, but then football has a tendency to throw up quirky results.

Aston Villa – Villains performing better than recent results suggest?

In terms of the overall performance, Aston Villa (18th – W7 D6 L20) came away from Anfield on Sunday with their heads firmly held high after limiting the newly-crowned Premier League champions to less than a handful of scoring opportunities whilst producing one or two bright moments in attack of their own. Unfortunately these valiant efforts went unrewarded, something that has been a common theme throughout the season.

Villa’s 2-0 loss last time out against Liverpool had promised more, especially with the contest still goalless at the 70th minute mark, but ultimately left them without a point to their name for the third match in five since the restart. Their rut runs much deeper, however, with Dean Smith’s men now without a league win in nine (D2 L7) – the longest current winless run in the top-flight – since beating Watford 2-0 at Villa Park in January.

The fixture list hasn’t exactly been their friend, though, having faced four of the current top-eight sides since the resumption. Defeats to Chelsea (1-2), Liverpool (2-0) and Wolves (0-1) were all narrow in margin and far from one-sided affairs, while Newcastle (1-1) and Sheff Utd (0-0) were both fortunate to have earned a share of the spoils from games in which Villa produced the better football. Sadly, it doesn’t get any easier with a resurgent Man Utd up next.

Manchester United – Free-flowing attack becoming impossible to suppress?

The Red Devils (5th – W15 D10 L8) are in menacing form and, after a run of three successive league victories for the first time since January of last year, are laying siege to the top-four. Should these lofty standards be maintained right through to the end of the season, it seems only a matter of time before one of either Chelsea or Leicester – the pair who are two and three points better off, respectively, in the table – falters to allow Solskjaer’s side in.

Saturday’s hectic 5-2 scoreline against Bournemouth, a side in desperately poor form which had only managed one goal in three post-restart fixtures, stretched United’s winning run in the league to three games whilst also preserving their unbeaten status, having not lost a top-flight fixture since the middle of January. Six wins and three draws have followed, with no team enjoying a longer unbeaten run in the competition.

Defensively, United had been sound prior to Bournemouth breaching them on two separate instances. It helps, though, to have an attack in such blistering form capable of bailing their defenders out of trouble. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes have combined to devastating affect lately, ensuring this team has netted a minimum of three goals in as many games.

Aston Villa Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Tyrone Mings – that unlikely goalscoring source – earned Aston Villa a surprising 2-2 draw when these teams met at Old Trafford in December, equalising in a game Villa actually held an early lead in. However, Man Utd have improved considerably during the intervening period: Solskjaer’s side are now unbeaten in nine Premier League games, as many games as this Villa side have gone since their last win.

Aston Villa Vs Manchester United – Key Facts

  • No team is currently on a longer run of games without registering a victory in the Premier League than Aston Villa (9 games – D2 L7).
  • Conversely, Manchester United have gone the same length of games since their last league defeat (W6 D3) and have won each of their most recent three.
  • These teams shared the points at Old Trafford earlier in the season, drawing 2-2, however, there hasn’t been a home win for Aston Villa in this fixture since 1995 (D7 L13).

Similar to their previous encounter, the ingredients are in place for another goal-laden meeting. United are in splendid form but particularly in attack, scoring at least three goals in each of their last three league games. Meanwhile Villa possess a useful knack for scoring in home games this season, only failing to do so on three of sixteen occasions. Man Utd to win with Over 2.5 Goals goals in the match, which landed in their three recent fixtures, once again appeals at 19/20 (Betway).
