Friday evening brings us further action from the Premier League and features this upcoming clash between Aston Villa and Southampton at Villa Park with the hosts looking to break a four-match winless spell in the top flight while Southampton will be eager to avoid a second defeat on the trot in the west midlands, as both teams chase an all-important three-point haul to boost ordinary starts to this new season.

Aston Villa Preview – Can Villa strike lucky?

Having failed to win any of their last four matches in the Premier League, Villa manager, Steven Gerrard, is coming under increasing pressure to get his side firing this season as the hosts have managed to capture just the one win to date from their opening six games of this new Premier League season.

That singular highlight came in the form of a 2-1 home win over Everton which would have pleased former Red, Steve Gerrard, but there’s been very little else to cheer about for The Villains as they’ve also slipped to four defeats within this six-game sequence and the west midlands hosts now find themselves perched just above the relegation zone but level on points with West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Therefore, this Friday evening clash against Southampton represents a vitally important fixture for The Villains but having lost to Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Arsenal, the hosts will need to pull something extra out of the bag here if they are to grab the all-important three points.

The bigger picture shows Aston Villa have managed to record just one win from their last 10 matches overall in the top flight but with just one loss from their previous five games on home soil at Villa Park, the hosts still stand a decent chance of a result against Saints on Friday night.

Villa will be without defender Diego Carlos due to an achilles tendon injury, while fellow defenders Matty Cash and Leander Dendoncker are rated as doubtful.

Aston Villa won the previous home fixture against Southampton 4-0 at Villa Park back in March of last season.

Southampton Preview – Can Saints steer clear of early trouble?

Southampton currently occupy the relative safety of 12th place in the early Premier League standings thanks to victories over Leicester City and Chelsea respectively, but the south coast visitors are still only three points ahead of their hosts, Aston Villa, prior to this upcoming trip to the west midlands on Friday night.

Saints have already tasted defeat a few times this season as well, losing to Tottenham, Manchester United and Wolves, the latter being away at Molineux, and the visitors will be keen to avoid a second defeat in the west midlands in this encounter but the bigger picture shows that Southampton have found league wins hard to come by in recent times.

With just three wins collected out of their last 18 matches in the Premier League, it’s a wonder that Saints haven’t had serious relegation battles on their hands under manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl, while results away from home have also done little to boost Saints’ ailing fortunes in the top flight.

Southampton have recorded just one win out of their last 10 outings on the road which came in the shape of a 2-1 win away at Leicester City but six defeats within this period suggest that the visitors may well have their work cut out on Friday evening at Villa Park, especially with the previous heavy 4-0 defeat last time at Villa Park in the backs of their collective minds.

Defender Valentino Livramento and midfielder Romeo Lavia will be missing for the visitors due to knee and muscle injuries respectively while fellow defender Duje Caleta-Car is struggling with match fitness and also looks likely to miss out.
