Preview: Two under-fire coaches. Passionate fan bases that expect more from teams that received significant investment in the summer. It really is all set up to be a tense affair at Villa Park on Sunday between the struggling pair of Aston Villa and West Ham.

Aston Villa – Fans demanding more of Gerrard?

With a full pre-season behind him and some positive reinforcements made in the summer transfer market, optimism was abound that Steven Gerrard could take the club to that next level and possibly challenge for European qualification. Yet a return of three points from the first three league games (W1 L2) – all of which were eminently winnable – isn’t what the Villa Park faithful envisaged at the start of the campaign.

A nervy home win over Everton, edging out the side with the poorest away record in the Premier League last season, was sandwiched by two-goal margin defeats away to Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. In other words, a thoroughly unconvincing start for a side in poor form for a while now. That Everton game remains their only league win in seven, having won just three of their last 15 in the competition (D3 L8).

Key Stat: Aston Villa haven’t managed a Premier League clean sheet for eight games (W2 D2 L4), since a 2-0 win at Villa Park against an already relegated Norwich City at the end of April.

West Ham – Moyes struggling to life Hammers out of slump?

It’s another short turnaround for the Hammers. They have only three days – probably only two of that will be spent on the training ground – to fly back and then recover from Thursday’s trip to Denmark in the Europa Conference League. Hardly ideal preparation then for a team which has finished in the top-seven in each of the past two campaigns but who are still without a point or a goal scored so far this term.

Although they could be forgiven for a 2-0 loss to Man City during the opening round of matches, their failure to take anything from games against Nottingham Forest and Brighton – losing 1-0 away and 2-0 at home respectively – were a lot more difficult for fans to stomach. Pressure is therefore mounting on David Moyes. Especially as their form at the tail end of last season was so poor (one win in last seven: D1 L5).

Key Stat: West Ham’s defensive woes are similar to that of Aston Villa. The Hammers would only manage a single Premier League clean sheet in the past 14 games, with that also being against an already relegated Norwich City back in May.

Aston Villa Vs West Ham Betting Advice

With pressure increasing on both managers, Sunday’s Villa Park clash already feels significant. The situation may not seem as grave at Aston Villa, who do at least have that narrow win here at Villa Park over Everton to show for after threeleague games. For West Ham though, it all feels a little desperate. With no points on the board and not so much as a goal scored, David Moyes is all too aware his team must start producing.

Aston Villa Vs West Ham United – Key Facts:

  • After completing six Premier League games between them this season, Aston Villa (W1 L2) and West Ham (L3) have scored a combined two league goals in 2022-23.
  • Their recent meetings do, however, suggest a first win of the season could be in the offing for West Ham. The Hammers have won each of their last four league games against Aston Villa, winning here at Villa Park in 2020-21 (3-1) and 2021-22 (4-1).
  • The pair warmed up with convincing midweek victories though. Aston Villa put four past Bolton in Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie while West Ham eased past Viborg out in Denmark on Thursday evening.

Both teams went some way to restoring fragile team morales with winning performances in midweek. Aston Villa, involved on Tuesday as opposed to West Ham who were in Denmark on Thursday, stand to benefit from an extra couple days rest though. I’m hopeful they can make this count, facing opponents who have sustained seven defeats across their previous nine Premier League away games.
