After missing a golden opportunity to open this series Down Under with a win, England have to try and pick up the pieces on Saturday.

The manner in which they lost that first Test will have been a heavy blow to their confidence.

Australia will now look to turn the screw in Brisbane and put a cap on the series win which they need to regain some confidence of their own.

Australia Preview – Wallabies favourites for a second success

Given the position that Australia had been in during the First Test, they wouldn’t expect to be standing 1-0 up in this series.

They were down to 14 men in the first half as lock Darcy Swain was given a red card.

The Wallabies had also lost three players to injury, including influential fly-half Quade Cooper before kick-off.

After going in 6-6 at the break, England were the first on the board in the second half with Ellis Genge scoring.

But instead of crumbling, the Australian side admirably rallied and laid siege to England’s territory.

With a quarter of the match to play, Australia trailed by five points. But they just kept going at England.

It was a cracking performance for Australia and despite not having the numbers, were still able to pull England’s back line all over the place.

Australia got out of there with a 30-28 victory against their old rivals.

For Saturday’s second Test, they are a quote of 8/13 in the match outright for Australia vs England rugby betting* (odds recorded 20:28 GMT on July 7th, 2022 at Betfred).

Our betting prediction:
Australia 1-5 winning margin

The Wallabies had badly needed that victory as well after their tough autumn internationals in the northern hemisphere.

They had lost three in a row there against Scotland, England and Wales.

Australia had not played an international since their 29-28 defeat by the Welsh.

The Wallabies now have the momentum but another tight match is expected.

The Australia 1-5 winning margin rugby tip for Australia v England rugby betting is at 5/1* (odds recorded 20:28 GMT on July 7th, 2022 at Betfred)

Australia Starting XV

Petaia; Wright, Paisami, Kerevi, Koroibete; Lolesio, White; Bell, Porecki, Tupou, Philip, Neville, Leota, Hooper (captain), Valetini
Replacements: Fainga’a, Sio, Slipper, Frost, Samu, Gordon, O’Connor, Perese

England Preview – England look for a response

How England lost that first Test is such a puzzling affair still, even a week later.

They should have been in full command early in the second half, but they lost their way.

England were unable to handle Australia spreading the ball wide, and tackles were being missed.

The replacements sent on to steady the ship couldn’t help stem the tide.

It was all very strange and now the tourists go as 11/8 underdogs in rugby betting on Saturday* (odds recorded 20:28 GMT on July 7th, 2022 at Betfred).

England are going to have to dig deep to come up with a response in Brisbane on the weekend.

That was their fourth loss in six internationals during the 2022 calendar year and clearly not good enough.

The response by head coach Eddie Jones has been to ring the changes.

That was his first defeat as England boss against Australia (W8 L1).

England will start with Leicester’s Jack van Poortvliet at scrum-half and he was one of England’s try-scorers last weekend after coming on.

Guy Porter makes an international debut in the centre and Tommy Freeman makes a debut on the wing.

Sam Underhill replaces Tom Curry who is missing because of a concussion.

Perhaps the strangest decision is to keep the Marcus Smith and Owen Farrell partnership at fly-half and inside centre.

The two play very different games and they don’t appear to bring the best out of each other.

Can England get back into this situation?

England Starting XV

Steward; Nowell, Porter, Farrell, Freeman; Smith, Van Poortvliet; Genge, George, Stuart, Itoje, Hill, Lawes (captain), Underhill, B Vunipola
Replacements: Cowan-Dickie, M Vunipola, Heyes, Chessum, Ludlam, Willis, Care, Arundell
