With the final of the Copa del Rey out of the way and the trophy secured following a second-half dismantling of Athletic Bilbao, who lost their second final in as many weeks, there really can be no excuses for Barcelona (W20 D5 L5) should they not finish the remainder of the La Liga season strongly. Even more so with them no longer competing in this season’s Champions League, exiting in the Round of 16 to PSG.
Ronald Koeman’s side must find five points on long-time frontrunners Atletico Madrid, who have played a game more than the Catalans. This isn’t that game in hand, though, with all 20 teams involved in midweek. Meanwhile, Diego Simeone’s men have what appears to be a gimme, facing 17th-placed Huesca at Wanda Metropolitano, making three points against Getafe at Camp Nou paramount for Barca.
Barcelona were beaten on their most recent league outing, however, losing a second El Clasico of the season 2-1 in Madrid. That a first loss in La Liga since December, having previously won 13 of 14 matches in the competition to surge into title reckoning. They remain unbeaten at home in twelve, though, scoring 32 times and conceding ten. Five of their nine wins in this sequence coming by a margin of at least three goals.
Getafe – From European aspirants to relegation uncertainty?
This time last season, Getafe (W7 D10 L14) were still in contention for a top-six finish that would have seen them qualify for continental competition for a second successive season. They subsequently ended 2019-20 two points shy in eighth, returning to action and winning only one of their remaining eleven La Liga fixtures. It seems that form was a precursor for the season ahead.
After a promising start, when winning three of their first five league games, with none more impressive than the 1-0 victory at their Coliseum Alfonso Perez over Barcelona, Getafe would do so only four more times across the following 26 rounds. All against sides (Cadiz, Elche, Huesca and Valencia) no higher than 13th in the current La Liga standings. They are limping towards another season at this level.
Jose Bordalas’ men still have plenty to do before they can rest easy. Perched four points above relegation, Getafe are amongst the division’s most out-of-form outfits, with one win in thirteen (W1 D5 L7) and a single goal scored in more than eight hours of football. Yet they’ve now lost only once in five (D4), conceding just twice, having held both of Atletico and Real Madrid to goalless draws on their own patch.
