Barcelona – Can Catalans follow up big win in San Sebastian?

Xavi Hernandez’s team certainly haven’t been shy in coming forward this season, with their Expected Goals For (xGF) figure in their two league matches so far both exceeding the 2.00 mark. Yet it took until the second of those to find their shooting boots. A 4-1 hammering of Real Sociedad, away from home, bringing up Barcelona’s first win of the campaign – and first in four La Liga games (D2 L1) – in emphatic style.

That result went some way to atoning for what was a frustrating first outing of 2022-23 at home to Rayo Vallecano, who came away with a valuable point following a 0-0 scoreline at the Camp Nou. The assumption now will be that Barca pick up immediately where they left off at Reale Arena. That is by no means guaranteed, however, having blanked in front of goal in four of the last six La Liga home games (W2 D1 L3).

Key Stat: Barcelona are seeking to win a seventh game in a row versus Sunday’s opponents. However they’ve been made to work hard in most of their recent meetings, with Barca scoring Under 1.5 Goals in five of the seven previous duels with Valladolid.

Valladolid – Visitors determined to keep it tight?

It is an admittedly small sample size but, after just two rounds of matches, the underlying numbers suggest a long season fighting off relegation awaits last season’s runners-up from the Segunda Division. Valladolid were decisively beaten on xG in both games so far. However, whereas this was reflected in Matchday 1’s 3-0 home loss to Villarreal, they defied logic by claiming a 1-1 draw away to Sevilla last time.

A point from those games isn’t to be sniffed at. Although it does only get tougher from here. Not managing to avoid defeat away at Barcelona for coming on 11 years, losing on eight subsequent visits and last winning here in 1997! The Blanquivioletas do have cause for optimism, though, with that draw at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan making it one away league defeat and just 11 conceded across the last 12 said fixtures (W7 D4).

Key Stat: After only managing a draw from their first two matches upon their return to La Liga, Valladolid are now on a 14-game winless run in the competition (D7 L7) since beating Getafe 2-1 at home in March 2021.

Barcelona Vs Valladolid Betting Advice

Last week’s 4-1 win away from home over Real Sociedad – who are seldom beaten so convincingly in San Sebastian – for Barcelona was fully merited, even if the actual scoreline flattered them a touch. Barca have not struggled to carve out openings this season, averaging 2.34 xGF across the opening two games, but cannot always be relied on to put them away, as was the case first time out against Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona Vs Real Valladolid – Key Facts:

  • All of the past six league meetings between these sides were won by Barcelona. However, just two of these contests contained more than two goals.
  • Barcelona have four points from their first two La Liga matches (W1 D1), picking up their first win last time out courtesy of a resounding 4-1 scoreline away at Real Sociedad.
  • Valladolid are still looking for their first three points since returning to La Liga over the summer (D1 L1). Last week’s 1-1 draw on the road against Sevilla, however, should give them the belief they can at least make life difficult this weekend.

Barca simply couldn’t put the ball in the net against Vallecano, with that a fourth La Liga home game in six in which Xavi’s men were held ‘to nil’. So it wouldn’t constitute as the biggest of surprises were they to make hark work of Sunday’s assignment. Their opponents, Valladolid, have kept the Catalan outfit to no more than a solitary goal in five of their past seven meetings, including twice at Camp Nou since 2019.
