Domestic games do not come much bigger than Saturday’s clash between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund with both clubs going all out to secure the Bundesliga title. Two points split them in the visitors’ favour so it’s going to be a crucial 90 minutes.

Bayern Munich Preview

Bayern were red-hot favourites at the beginning of the season to continue their domination of German football and win their seventh straight Bundesliga title. With seven games left their destiny is still in their own hands but it’s been a very turbulent maiden season in charge for Niko Kovac who finds himself in the position of requiring to win at home to their nearest rivals or risk carrying the same of the club’s first manager since 2012 to let the title slip. Bayern have already been eliminated from the Champions League at the first knockout phase which carries some shame in itself and he will certainly not want to miss out on the other major honours that this club expects to win each season. Having endured a difficult first half of the league season, the champions look to be wrestling control back from Dortmund in recent weeks and were indeed top up until last week. A slip-up in the shape of a 1-1 draw away to mid-table Freiburg has seen Bayern drop to second spot ahead of this game in what is being rightly billed as the biggest match in the short tenure of Kovac. Lose this game and perhaps the title would make it very unlikely that the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager would be in charge come the beginning of next season – so he’s essentially trying to save his career in Munich.

Key-Facts – Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund

  • The title race in Bundesliga has been enthralling and Dortmund hold a two point lead going into Saturday’s game
  • Dortmund were 3-2 winners when the teams met back November in what was the game of the season
  • The last seven games have produced 32 goals with six of them seeing both teams scoring and going over 2.5 goals

Borussia Dortmund Preview

Like his opposite number on Saturday, Lucien Favre is also in his season in charge of Dortmund and it’s been an altogether more positive experience for the Swiss manager. Expectations are different compared to Bayern in that whilst a title challenge is seen as an objective for the club, the pressure is not the same because of the different budgets that the two giants are operating with. It makes their current position of holding top spot all that more impressive and now they are within touching distance of clinching their first title since the glory days of Jurgen Klopp, that desire and associated pressure is just growing stronger. Dortmund head to Munich on Saturday having reclaimed first place following another dramatic ending to their latest game where two last-minute goals from Paco Alcacer gave them a vital three points at home to Wolfsburg and allowing them to take advantage of the dropped points of Bayern on the same day. This is a club who have often had an inferiority to their opponents this weekend but having beaten them already this season and sat above them in the table for long spells, you sense that complex is diminished compared to recent years.

Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

Both managers have been quick to try and play this game down as a title decider but there’s no doubting it is a hugely significant match in terms of who will be crowned champions come the end of the season. A win for the hosts would see them leapfrog their opponents and retake top spot at the first time of asking whilst three points for Dortmund would take them five clear and almost one hand on the trophy. The Bundesliga season has been dramatic throughout and Saturday is only expected to continue that.

Dortmund ran out 3-2 winners when these sides met back in November in what was the game of the season so far. There’s a good possibility we’ll see a similar game on Saturday with the league’s two top scorers facing off against each other. The last seven meetings between the teams have all ended with at least three goals in them and accumulated a total of 31 goals. Six of those games have seen both teams scoring as well making over 2.5 goals and both teams to score a very attractive proposition on Saturday.
