Bayern Munich – Electric offensively, suspect defensively?

Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern are belatedly up and running in the new season, registering their first victory of the campaign on matchday 2 courtesy of a 3-2 scoreline at home to a spirited FC Koln. Robert Lewandowski found the net for the 12th league game in a row to equal his own personal best scoring run, but it was Serge Gnabry’s brace which ultimately settled a thrilling contest in Munich.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side have now amassed a total of 5.63 xG across their pair of Bundesliga fixtures so far, according to Infogol’s Expected Goals model, with 3.13 coming in the 1-1 draw away to Borussia Monchengladbach first time out. They have been far from watertight at the back, however, conceding three goals in two outings so far this term, and at least once in 12 of their last 16 top-flight fixtures.

So their games are expected to be fun. As was the case in this same fixture last season, Lewandowski scoring all four Bayern goals in a 4-3 victory. That marked a third successive league win over Hertha Berlin for the record champions, who have scored exactly four times in two of those meetings. This latest renewal will see them keen to make it 29 consecutive Bundesliga home matches without losing (W23 D5).

Hertha Berlin – Capital club on the ropes early?

It is back-to-back defeats to begin the new Bundesliga season in Germany for capital club Hertha Berlin. This is only the third time The Old Lady have begun a top-flight campaign without managing a point from their first two outings, with the club going on to suffer relegation in the most recent of those back in 1990-91. All this despite leading against both FC Koln and Wolfsburg, succumbing 3-1 and 1-2 respectively.

With no side ever managing to lose their opening three Bundesliga fixtures whilst holding the lead at some stage in those games, the Berliners can at least rest easy in the knowledge that the likelihood of them doing something unprecedented this weekend would appear minuscule. As while Hertha lost three of the past four league meetings with Bayern, only in their 2-2 draw in August 2019 did they take the lead.

To their credit, the team from the capital gave an excellent account of themselves on their latest visit to Allianz Arena, very nearly recovering from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to claim what would have been a third draw in four visits. In fact, their two defeats in this timeframe were both slender one-goal margins. Yet a first victory in Munich since 1977 feels beyond a side with one away league win in its last 14 efforts (D6 L7).

Bayern Munich Vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

Four points out of six is the grand total of Bayern Munich’s early exertions, producing some typically excellent underlying numbers in attack in their 1-1 draw at Gladbach and 3-2 win at home to FC Koln. With opponents Hertha Berlin coming off back-to-back losses, shipping five goals in all, the record champions could be primed for further spoils – though don’t be at all surprised were the visitors to contribute as well in Munich.

Bayern Munich Vs Hertha Berlin – Key Facts:

  • With their 3-2 win against FC Koln last weekend, Bayern Munich stretched their unbeaten streak when playing at home in the Bundesliga to 28 (W23 D5).
  • Contrastingly, Hertha Berlin have failed to acquire a point from their first two league games of the season and have won only once on the road in the last 14 (D6 L7).
  • Four of the past five Bundesliga contests involving Hertha Berlin have seen both teams score, as have each of the last four to feature Bayern Munich.

Last season’s corresponding fixture was an epic. Bayern ultimately prevailed 4-3 but Hertha, who have now scored five across their previous two visits to Allianz Arena having previously failed to net in five consecutive visits. The Old Lady did score in both league outings this season, and with Bayern still suspect at the back (conceding in 12 of last 16 Bundesliga games), another topsy-turvy duel cannot be ruled out.
