The Bundesliga returns for a new season and the first game of the campaign has Schalke making the ominous journey to face German and European champions Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich Preview – Will Bayern take a first step towards a potential ninth successive title in style?

It was a season to remember for Bayern last time around as they won every competition they entered to seal a magnificent treble. Their Champions League triumph combined with domestic dominance in the Bundesliga and German Cup replicated the success of 2013 and will no doubt draw comparisons between both teams and discussions as to who is better. Hans Flick will not be bothering with those distractions, instead looking ahead at what’s to come.

To emphasise how dominant Bayern were in the second half of last season, they are currently on a run of 21 straight victories and have not lost a competitive game so far this year. Their last defeat was on the 7th of December.

As always, the challenge for Bayern is keeping that level of form going and Flick will be aware that he cannot let his player’s standards slip. There have been some changes to the squad with Thiago moving to Liverpool the highest profile departure. Alexander Nubel has joined from tomorrow’s opponents with an eye to the future whilst another former Schalke player – Leroy Sane – has added to the frightening array of options Bayern have in attack.
This will be Bayern’s only game before they attempt to win another trophy when taking on Sevilla in next Thursday’s Super Cup.

Schalke Preview – Can Schalke put their miserable end to last season behind them and cause an upset here?

It could barely have been more contrasting parts to last season for Schalke. In David Wagner’s first season in charge of the club there was optimism aplenty heading into the winter break as supporters believed they could qualify for the Champions League. Fast forward to 2020 and those hopes quickly faded. Wagner’s men have won just one game in this calendar year – that coming at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on the first game back following the winter shutdown.

Schalke went on a run of 16 games without a win in which they lost 10 and that resulted in 12th placed finish and well off the European places.

The expectation was that Wagner would be looking for a new job over the summer but the board has stuck by him. There are obvious reasons why clubs will not commit to much change in the current circumstances but how much patience the support (or the owners) will have with Wagner should things not improve dramatically, remains to be seen.

Scoring goals was a real issue for the club last season with only two other teams managing to score less than Wagner’s team. That’s something which will have to improve in the season ahead.

Bayern Munich vs Schalke Betting Advice

The respective ends to last season could barely have been more opposite for Bayern and Schalke. The hosts produced some of the best football of any European club in recent years whilst Schalke are on the hunt for a first win since January. It’s also remarkable to think that Wagner has been in charge of his team longer than Flick, such was the turnaround overseen by the latter.

Key Facts – Bayern Munich vs Schalke Betting Tip

  • Bayern look to attempt to repeat one of their most successful ever seasons having won a magnificent treble
  • Schalke have stuck with David Wagner despite a desperate end to 2019/20, failing to win any of their last 16 matches
  • Bayern won both meetings last season by an aggregate score of 8-0

It’s eight straight wins for Bayern in this fixture, with Schalke’s last victory coming in December 2010. I don’t see that changing any time soon and Bayern, neither do the bookmakers. The free-scoring champions can get off to a winning start with at least four goals in the game.
