Bayern Munich – Champions beginning to look weary?

Having won six of their opening seven Bundesliga matches by an aggregate score of 27-11, many presumed Bayern Munich (W7 D3 L1) were already in the early throes of their march towards a 31st league title. However, a spate of injuries coupled with some steely determination from the opposition has led to the record champions dropping six of the last twelve points and, in turn, concede top spot to Bayer Leverkusen.

Since the final international break of the year in mid-November, Bayern have looked laboured on all fronts and in all aspects of their play, losing the xG battle in five of their previous six competitive matches despite winning half of them (W3 D3). In the league, they have been second best in each of the last five, sometimes marginally but even that is worrying for a team accustomed to dominating opponents.

The latest example came on the road over the weekend as Hansi Flick was powerless to prevent his team from drawing their third Bundesliga game in four, though it might have been worse still had Union Berlin been more clinical (xG: UNB 1.26 – 1.08 BAY). Bayern are averaging a measly 1.15 xG across their last six league contests, all of which featured goals at both ends, suggesting a shock could be around the corner.

Wolfsburg – Undefeated Wolves with everything to play for?

In quite the contrast to what Bayern were achieving in the early stages of the campaign, Wolfsburg (W5 D6) were struggling with the twinned challenge that comes with combining playing in Europe with maintaining the sort of standards domestically which earned them a seventh-place finish at the end of 2019/20. The outcome, unfortunately, was early elimination from the Europa League and no win in the league until Matchday 5.

Since edging newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld 2-1 at the Volkswagen Arena in late October, though, The Wolves have hardly looked back, registering 17 of the last 21 available points (W5 D2) as they continue to stretch their unbeaten start. Along with leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who they trail at the summit by four points, Wolfsburg are one of just two sides still to taste Bundesliga defeat this season.

It helps when this team doesn’t know when they are beaten. On no fewer than six occasions has Oliver Glasner seen his men claw back a deficit to earn points (W2 D4), a feat unrivalled during the current campaign. This was in evidence only last Friday, when a Wout Weghorst brace – the Dutchman up to nine for the season after netting in his last five appearances – sealed a come-from-behind win at home to Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich Vs Wolfsburg Betting Advice

Even though they were missing key players of their own, I nevertheless expected Bayern to account for the challenge of high-flying Union Berlin last time, with the capital side shorn of their most influential attacker for that game. That Bayern not only failed to win but were the inferior side – and not for the first time, having been so in many of their recent games – is disconcerting ahead of facing a still unbeaten opponent.

Bayern Munich Vs Wolfsburg – Key Facts:

  • Just one win from the last four league games now for Bayern Munich, who have seen nine of their eleven Bundesliga contests this season feature both teams scoring.
  • One of two sides in the German Bundesliga yet to lose in 2020/21, Wolfsburg have also secured more points (W2 D4) from losing positions than any other team.
  • History clearly favours Bayern, though, who have won all of the past five league meetings – 17-2 aggregate – since their last defeat, a 4-1 loss away in January 2015.

Wolfsburg came from behind for the sixth time this season to claim a hard-fought but richly deserved victory over Frankfurt last Friday, extending their fine start to eleven Bundesliga games without defeat (W5 D6). Sure they have only faced two of last season’s top-five, drawing both, but it is the sort of run players fight tooth and nail to preserve. Against this out-of-sorts Bayern, I’ll take the guests with a head start.
