Wolfsburg – Kovac with point to prove in Munich?

Last season, the Wolves enjoyed a more productive start to the Bundesliga campaign than champions Bayern, winning their first four under Mark van Bommel. That was as good as it got under the Dutchman, though, sacked not long after following a dismal run of results which seen them win two of the next 16. With the threat of relegation looming large, they thankfully turned it around to finish 12th of 18.

Wolfsburg wrapped up 2021-22 by going unbeaten in four (W2 D2), with the winter arrival of Max Kruse from Union Berlin particularly shrewd. The streak is still very much alive, then, after coming from 2-1 down to earn a 2-2 draw at home to newly-promoted Werder Bremen on the opening weekend. Meaning they’ve now scored in seven consecutive Bundesliga matches (W3 D3 L1).

Former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac should relish the challenge of trying to spoil the record champions quests for an 11th consecutive Bundesliga crown. The Croatian inherits a Wolves outfit which finished a disappointing 14 last term, accruing 19 points fewer than their total from the previous season. Wolfsburg finished strong last time round, however, and arrive in Munich unbeaten in five (W2 D3).
