Borussia Dortmund Preview – Can Dortmund begin this latest new era with a home win?

It may be the first game of the season but there has been no shortage of issues for Dortmund to contend with since the last played in May. The Marco Rose era did not work out as planned and the former Borussia Monchengladbach boss lasted just a year in charge. His replacement is the familar Edin Terzic who had a successful spell as interim coach in 2021 – leading the club to success in the German Cup final.

He was overlooked for the permanent role at that time but he has now been tasked with re-building the squad in the wake of Erling Haaland’s departure to Manchester City. His transfer was always likely to happen and Dortmund prepared as best they could moving for Sebastien Haller, however the striker signed from Ajax is undergoing treatment for cancer therefore will not be available for a prolonged period.

2/1
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Friday 29 July)
Dortmund will be able to call upon Nico Schlotterback, Niklas Sule and Karim Adeyemi – all of whom arrived in the summer, too. All of them featured in the 3-0 German Cup win over 1860 Munich last weekend, with the former RB Salzburg striker netting his first goal.
What success looks like for Dortmund this season is open for debate but they will feel second place in the Bundesliga is the minimum they should be aiming for, and that means laying down a marker against the team who finished directly below them last season.

Bayer Leverkusen Preview – Will Leverkusen find more improvement and lay down a marker against one of their rivals?

One of the oldest cliches in football is that the second season is always more challenging than the first. For Leverkusen and head coach Gerardo Seoane, they may already be experiencing that. A third place finish and qualification for this year’s Champions League was as good as they could have hoped for and it was all about building on that this time around.

They suffered a setback in their first game of the new season, however, losing 4-3 in the first round of the German Cup to Elversberg who play in the German third tier. Seoane will be hoping it is a mere blip and they can respond in this match.

Prior to that match, there was a lot of encouraging signs. Leverkusen were able to keep hold of their key players despite plenty of outside interest. Moussa Diaby, Florian Wirtz and Paulinho all look to have huge futures and will be big assets on the park once again.

Combined with the goals of Patrik Schick and it is one of the most exciting attacks in Europe, let alone Germany. Schick hit 24 in the league last season, only the now departed Robert Lewandowski managed more.

Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Advice

This is a blockbuster to get the Bundesliga underway for season 2022/23. Two of last season’s top three going head to head and looking for the perfect start to their league campaigns. Their preparations have not been ideal for different reasons but this is their chance to put that behind them.

From a neutral perspective it couldn’t be any better, either. The last nine meetings between these teams have produced 47, meaning an average of more than five per game.

Key Facts –  Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Tip

  • Edin Terzic has taken over from Marco Rose in the summer, having had a caretaker spell in charge in 2021
  • Leverkusen finished third last season, in what was Gerardo Seoane’s first campaign in charge
  • There have been 47 goals in the last nine meetings between these two clubs

How successful Dortmund can be long term without a physical presence up top remains to be seen but the new signings looked the part last week and they can get the campaign off to a flier.
