Borussia Dortmund Preview – Can Dortmund overcome poor record in this fixture and get the better of champions?

Its nine years since Dortmund last won a Bundesliga title and although they have been in the race a number of times since then they have contrived to find ways to lose it. Marco Rose is the latest coach tasked with overcoming the mighty Bayern and he will be aware of the pressure he and his players are under heading into the first league meeting between the two of his tenure.

Dortmund are one point adrift of their rivals but have a terrible record against them – losing the last six in all competitions. Their last win in the Bundesliga over Bayern was back in 2018. Being able to get over that mental block would go a long way to helping them get into the mindset that they can triumph over the course of the season.

 

 

Their home form domestically has been flawless for some time now. Dortmund are looking for a 12^th straight win at Signal-Iduna Park, having won their first seven home games of this season. Unsurprisingly that’s the best in the league and the only yet to drop points at home so far.

Last weekend’s win away to Wolfsburg was significant not only because it kept them just a point behind Bayern but also seen the return of Erling Haaland. He had been missing for over a month due to injury and will almost certainly make his first start in this game since October.

Having looked imperious at times during this season there is no doubt that Bayern’s level of performance has dropped somewhat over the last month or so. The 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach in the German Cup appears to have unsettled them slightly.

The champions have only lost one game since then but the displays have been less than convincing. It’s not a bad habit to be in when playing below your best but still finding ways to win but Julian Nagelsmann will know his team will have to raise their game if they are to stretch their lead to four points.

Bayern had won four straight away from home in the Bundesliga prior to playing Augsburg last month, who provided one of the shocks of the season to win 2-1. It remains just one of two games where Bayern have dropped points on their travels under Nagelsmann.

One of the challenges for Bayern heading into this game is who they will play in midfield. Joshua Kimmich remains out and there is doubts over the fitness of fellow German internationalist Leon Goretzka. There are options, of course, but the experience of these two in this fixture is always going to be a miss.

You sense that unless Dortmund can get the better of Bayern in one of these games then any hopes they harbour of winning a first title in a decade are unrealistic. They have done well to keep it within a point considering the injury to star man Haaland but this is the acid test.

The home team will not be helped by the fact that German clubs are now having to play their games with reduced capacity so they won’t have the backing of a full stadium in this one.

 

 

Bayern may not have been at their best of late but they just know how to win and that particularly applies to the big games. I’m not going to go against them here so back them to extend their lead at the top to four points.
