The same defensive frailties that have plagued them throughout the season were again in evidence last time out, as Borussia Dortmund (3rd – W11 D6 L4) spurned an opportunity to reduce the arrears on the leaders by losing 4-3 away to Bayer Leverkusen. A lot of these issues stem from an inability to perform as well on their travels, though, as their record at Signal Iduna Park remains incredibly strong: W7 D3 L0. In fact, they are the only team in the German top-flight still to lose at home in 2019-20. Averaging nearly four goals per home game, Dortmund have scored a minimum of three times in each of the last six, including five in the most recent two against FC Koln (5-1) and Union Berlin (5-0).

Had it not been for the intervention of the winter break, Eintracht Frankfurt (9th – W8 D4 L9) would have probably continued on their descent towards the Bundesliga drop zone. Their final seven league games of 2019 returned a single point out of a possible 21 (D1 L6) to leave them hovering precariously above the relegation places. The path they were heading down was only too apparent.

The recuperation period has worked wonders, though, as Die Adler begun 2020 with renewed vigour and playing like a team seemingly reborn. A far cry from the one that seen out a dismal month of December with defeat after defeat. Confidence has well and truly been restored and it culminated in last week’s 5-0 demolition of Augsburg at the Commerzbank-Arena, where Adi Hutter’s men ran riot, scoring four during a rampant second-half display.

Not since the season of 1969-70 has Frankfurt begun a new year with as many points as they do now (10). A superb turnaround which started with a 2-1 victory away at Hoffenheim – only their second win on the road all season (W2 D1 L7) – before springing something of a surprise at home against RB Leipzig, beating the team who were top of the table at the time 2-0. The only blemish during an otherwise imperious run the 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf.
