Preview: Saturday’s Premier League action rounds up at the Vitality Stadium, where Arsenal are aiming to maintain their perfect start to the season at a ground they’ve lost only once in five previous visits in the competition. Can Bournemouth, though, become the first side to stifle the Gunners’ early momentum?

Bournemouth – Cherries brought back down to earth with a bump?

Unfortunately for Scott Parker, it wasn’t long before the euphoria of beating Aston Villa on opening weekend was long forgotten about – his side thrashed 4-0 last time out at Etihad Stadium by a rampant Man City. They won’t be the first team this season to lose by such a wide margin at the home of the champions. Even so, the result was demoralising and marked a swift return to reality following their 2-0 win at home to Villa.

The Cherries were without last season’s second top goalscorer in the Championship for the game in Manchester but should welcome Dominic Solanke back into the fold here. That is a big boost as they offered nothing in the way of a goal threat at the Etihad. Especially as it doesn’t get much easier with a visit from quick starters Arsenal, against whom Bournemouth have won only once in 10 Premier League meetings (D2 L7).

Key Stat: Thanks to Opta we know that no team in this season’s Premier League has had fewer shots (10) than Bournemouth, while only Nottingham Forest have faced more than Scott Parker’s men (42).

Arsenal – Arteta’s side gunning for Premier League summit?

With Man City not involved until Sunday, Arsenal can climb on top of the Premier League – for roughly 24 hours at least – with a win at the Vitality Stadium. The Gunners have only ever lost once at this ground, with wins on three of their six prior visits across all competitions, and will be confident on bolstering that record after an impressive start to the campaign which has seen them collect maximum points so far.

Alongside champions Man City, the Gunners are the only top-flight team boasting a perfect record after the opening two rounds. Mikel Arteta’s revamped side, now spearheaded by the industrious Gabriel Jesus who has immediately raised the standards among the dressing room, followed a 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace by winning a wild encounter 4-2 against Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium last week.

Key Stat: There hasn’t been a drawn outcome for Arsenal in 19 consecutive Premier League games (W13 D6), with this the longest ongoing run in the English top tier.

Bournemouth Vs Arsenal Betting Advice

Momentum is with Saturday’s visitors and this is reflected in their odds of victory at the Vitality Stadium. Mikel Arteta’s side retained their perfect record this season by scoring four against Leicester City last time, and now renew terms against Bournemouth who were themselves on the wrong end of a four goal loss on Matchday 2. Nevertheless, the Gunners – who won 9 of 19 away league games last term – are too short for me.

Bournemouth Vs Arsenal – Key Facts:

  • Across their five previous meetings in all competition when Bournemouth were hosts, there was never a game in which both teams didn’t score. Arsenal, though, have only ever lost one of five visits in the Premier League (W2 D2 L1).
  • Four of their six competitive matches against one another at the Vitality Stadium featured two first-half goals. Arsenal were 2-0 up at the break in the most recent of those, a 2-1 FA Cup triumph in January 2020.
  • Arsenal have won their past three league games, scoring 11 in the process. However they would lose four of their seven previous away matches in the competition (W3).

Would I be prepared to lay Arsenal though? Probably not. Their summer arrivals have given them a huge lift, in particular Gabriel Jesus who scored twice last weekend and could have had a hat-trick. Instead I am happy to put up Both Teams Scoring/Over 2.5. Bournemouth have scored in 21 of their past 24 home league games while each of the last five meetings at this ground featured BTTS, with four going Over 2.5 Goals.
