Preview: The Amex hasn’t been the happiest of hunting grounds for this weekend’s latest guests. Manchester United have lost on three of their four prior visits to Brighton in the Premier League and, after an early wobble, should be concerned ahead of their midday kick-off down by the South Coast on Saturday.

Brighton Preview – Potter needs to make Amex a fortress?

The Seagulls received their fair share of plaudits for a fine all round performance in their opening Premier League fixture at home to Chelsea, a game they ultimately lost 3-1 but which might have turned out differently had fans been allowed at The Amex. Graham Potter’s men built on this promising display by producing even better the following weekend away to Newcastle, thumping the Magpies 3-0 on Tyneside.

Brighton were utterly dominant at St James’ Park, limiting the hosts to next to nothing from an attacking sense, as a Neal Maupay brace and a late effort from Aaron Connolly capped an enterprising display. The only negative was losing marauding full-back Tariq Lamptey to injury. The 19-year-old has looked a real handful on that right flank and would be a significant loss should he not recover in time.

A chance to record back-to-back league wins for the first time since November 2019 suddenly presents itself, which, in itself, is a statistic which highlights a glaring weakness to this Brighton side. A lack of consistency. Especially at The Amex where their only league win in 2020 was against Arsenal during Project Restart. They’ve since lost four of the last five at home, to Chelsea, Liverpool and both Manchester clubs.

Man Utd Preview – Red Devils should improve but how soon?

The Red Devils haven’t lost their first two Premier League fixtures since 1992/93 and, although they subsequently went and won the league title that same season, won’t like their chances of history repeating should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side come away from The Amex stadium on Saturday with another defeat to their name. This after already losing their opening encounter to Crystal Palace, losing 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Losing to Roy Hodgson’s Palace side constituted a major upset, notwithstanding the fact Man Utd were getting their first run out of the season in comparison with said opponents, whom already had 90 minutes (vs Southampton in a 1-0 win) under their belts. United were lethargic, uninspiring and, in sharp contrast to some of the slick and cohesive displays towards the end of last season, devoid of ideas in the attacking third.

The midweek EFL Cup encounter with Luton consisted primarily of those on the fringes of the United squad, sprinkled with star cameos, but those are useful minutes in the legs for some. There is even an argument playing away will suit them this weekend: since a 2-0 loss at Liverpool in January, Man Utd have strung together a seven-game (W5 D2) unbeaten away run in the league, winning the last four consecutively without conceding.

Brighton Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Purely on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far this season, it is Brighton who are shaping as the more likely of these sides to clinch the victory on Saturday. Graham Potter’s men have looked incredibly fit and enthusiastic over two matches, scoring a combined four times in registering a win in Newcastle and a harsh home loss at the hands of big spending Chelsea.

Brighton Vs Manchester United – Key Facts

  • One win in their last ten Premier League home games (W1 D4 L5) for Brighton, with that sole success a 2-1 victory against Arsenal in June.
  • Manchester United are currently on a run of four consecutive away victories without conceding in the Premier League, last losing an away fixture in January (W5 D2 since).
  • Brighton have been victorious on three of the four previous occasion they have hosted Manchester United in the Premier League, though did lose the most recent of those 3-0 in June.

The pressure is well and truly on for Man Utd after the debacle at Old Trafford last weekend, when they were inferior in every aspect to Crystal Palace. They’ll improve – it’s not like they can fare much worse – but enough to force a repeat of their 3-0 win here back in June? Time will tell. Brighton can cause them problems though, and I’d be surprised if either walked away from this having not conceded at least once. 2-2 Draw.
