Brighton – Potter on cusp of seasonal best performance?

Since the 2017-18 season, their first ever in the Premier League, Brighton have never recorded a finishing position higher than 15th. While their best points total is 41, which they achieved in each of the past two seasons. Both look set to be eclipsed by Graham Potter’s side, who sit tenth on 40 points with five games left to play. Unfortunately for them, the first of those is against their bogey opponents.

Brighton are facing Southampton for the tenth time in the Premier League, winning one of nine prior meetings (W5 L3) and none of four (D1 L3) here at Amex Stadium. Yet recent away wins over top-four protagonists Arsenal and Tottenham should instil belief they can get to grips with opponents languishing 13th. Although one win in their last 13 home games (D6 L6), failing to score in the last five, is a concern.

Key Stat: Only two teams in the history of the Premier League has ever had longer runs without scoring a goal at home than Brighton, who are currently on a run of five consecutive games without scoring at their Amex Stadium.

Southampton – Saints already on the proverbial beach?

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl questioned his side’s fighting qualities when speaking after Thursday’s bitterly disappointing 2-0 loss away to Burnley, who remain in the bottom three despite their deserved win at Turf Moor. The Austrian may well get the desired response on Sunday. That’s because Southampton boast an excellent record in this fixture, winning on three of their four visits to Brighton in the Premier League.

On the other hand, we’re talking about a team that has suffered five defeats in seven (W1 D1) and were indebted to Fraser Forster in the Saints goal for their 1-0 victory at home to Arsenal eight days ago. Away from home they haven’t beaten anyone since upsetting Tottenham in February, producing two goals across four subsequent away outings (D2 L2) to leave them with the fifth-worst away record in the top-flight.

Key Stat: Southampton have scored no more than one goal in 12 of their 16 away games in this season’s Premier League, with four of their eight away defeats being ‘to nil’.

Brighton Vs Southampton Betting Advice

Historically, this fixture has favoured Southampton who have won all of the last three league meetings here in Brighton, and four in a row when including all competitions. In fact, the omens get worse for Graham Potter’s side. In nine previous Premier League meetings between the sides there has never been a win for the home side (D5 L4). At 6/4 in the Draw No Bet betting, Southampton look interesting.

Brighton Vs Southampton – Key Facts:

  • These teams are meeting for the tenth time in the Premier League. Southampton currently lead the head-to-head with three wins to Brighton’s one, with all three Saints victories earned as the away side.
  • Each of the past four meetings produced both teams scoring. Neither have shown much form in front of goal lately, though, Brighton going their last five home matches without scoring and Southampton mustering two in their last four on the road.
  • So toothless are Brighton here at Amex Stadium that no team in this season’s Premier League has scored fewer goals at home than the Seagulls, whose tally of 10 from 16 games averages out at 0.63 per home game.

Finding faith in a Saints team with one win in seven, and none in their last four away from home, takes some doing though. The draw appeals then, as does the odds about at least one of these teams not scoring. Brighton have gone five consecutive home games without scoring while Southampton managed just two across their last four on the road. We may even be in store for our first goalless meeting between the clubs.
