Following last week’s FA Cup action, the Premier League season resumes this weekend and my next pick features high-flying Burnley taking on relegation-threatened Southampton at Turf Moor as the hosts look to confirm their status as ‘the best of the rest’ in the top flight.
Burnley currently sit in 7th place in the Premiership but they’re in danger of letting their excellent season fall a little by the wayside as The Clarets have failed to win a league match from their last ten outings, a run that includes five draws and five defeats.
Manager, Sean Dyche, has a number of key players waiting on fitness tests, not least, striker Chris Wood and defender Tarkowski, and their former Turf Moor fortress has been anything but in recent weeks as they’ve suffered losses to Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United, but they did manage to grab a point against runaway league leaders, Manchester City.
Southampton’s 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool last time out ended an encouraging four match unbeaten sequence which saw the south coast outfit take points off Watford, Tottenham and Brighton, as well as grab all three points in a 3-2 win at The Hawthorns against West Brom.
However, Saints’s win at West Brom has been their only success from their last 14 matches overall, and it’s a wonder that they’ve stuck by manager, Pellegrino, in an age where football managers are given very little room for error.
Draws at Manchester United and Watford, along with the win at West Brom has perhaps given Pellegrino a stay of execution, but they stand a reasonable chance of avoiding defeat again on their travels here against a surprisingly off-colour Burnley outfit.
