Burnley Preview – First win of the season proving elusive?

Reports this week that the club could be sold, thus potentially releasing much-needed funds to reinvigorate a stagnant playing squad, will be music to the ears of Burnley fans who have had to endure a miserable start to the season. The Clarets are one of three sides – Fulham and Sheff Utd being the others – still to record a win in the Premier League, after collecting one point from their first five fixtures (D1 L4).

The fixture list thus far hasn’t exactly been unkind either. Leicester and Tottenham finished in fifth and sixth-place last season, respectively, with Burnley losing 4-2 at the former and 1-0 at home to Jose Mourinho’s side last Monday. Meanwhile Newcastle, Southampton and West Brom were bottom half teams or recently promoted and, as such, were match-ups which should have garnered more than a solitary point.

Home comforts haven’t been in evidence so far this season, having already slumped to successive 1-0 losses against Southampton and Tottenham. Bearing in mind how they lost their final home game of 2019-20 to Brighton, Sean Dyche is now at serious risk – with big-spending Chelsea next in Lancashire – of becoming the first Burnley manager in more than a decade to lose four Premier League home games on the spin.

Chelsea Preview – Blues gradually developing into more polished outfit?

Many were tipping them for a tilt at the Premier League title this season on the back of their summer splurge in the transfer market. While it may still happen, Chelsea’s sporadic form through the first six fixtures has tempered early enthusiasm. The West Londoners occupying a place in the bottom half of the table after only two league wins (W2 D3 L1) thus far.

However, it would appear Frank Lampard has moved to address a glaring weakness in this Chelsea side: a porous defence. Since the 3-3 draw with Southampton at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 5, there has been a notable shift in approach, leaving fewer gaps and working harder to maintain their solid shape. It has certainly paid dividends, recording three consecutive clean sheets across their last three matches.

The first two shutouts – at home to Sevilla in Europe and Man Utd at Old Trafford in the league – came in dull 0-0 draws as Lampard struggled to find a balance. On Wednesday, however, The Blues sparked into life, netting four times without conceding in a dominant performance away to FC Krasnodar. An ominous display ahead of facing winless Burnley, against whom they also scored four in last season’s Turf Moor encounter.

Burnley Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

Christian Pulisic claimed a hat-trick in this fixture last season as Chelsea won 4-2 at Turf Moor having led 4-0 inside an hour. That result further compounded what is an atrocious head-to-head record for Burnley, who have won only one of the pair’s twelve Premier League meetings (W1 D3 L8) and never as the home side (D1 L5). Three of Chelsea’s five victories here in Lancashire, meanwhile, were by a 2+ margin.

Burnley Vs Chelsea – Key Facts

  • After losing each of their last three Premier League games at Turf Moor, Burnley are on the verge of losing four consecutive league games at home for the first time since 2010.
  • Edouard Mendy can become the first Chelsea goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in each of his first three Premier League appearances since Petr Cech in 2004.
  • Chelsea did the double over Burnley in the league in 2019-20, winning 4-2 away and 3-0 in West London. Their record in head-to-heads now reads W8 D3 L1 (W5 D1 away).

Burnley have only once failed to score at home to Chelsea, though. Which means the latter’s recent defensive improvements, keeping a clean sheet in each of their previous three matches, will be tested on Saturday afternoon. Furthermore, all six meetings at Turf Moor produced a minimum of two goals, with all but one going Over 2.5 Goals. That bet, coupled with a Chelsea victory, appeals at 5/4 with Boylesports.
