Preview: Turf Moor will host a Premier League fixture for the first time in 55 days when Burnley play host to Watford in a contest pitting the league’s bottom two teams against each other. Can Burnley repeat their 1-0 victory from June 2020 when the sides last met in Lancashire?

Burnley – Weghorst to fire Clarets to second W of the season?

Saturday’s rearranged meeting with a Watford side only two points better off in 19th, the Hornets having also played two games more, must feel like a long time coming for those Burnley supporters who have gone nearly two months without seeing a Premier League fixture at Turf Moor. Those fortunate enough to be in attendance could catch a glimpse of the club’s big money signing on deadline day, Wout Weghorst.

Weghorst was regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable goalscorers, surpassing 15 league goals in each of the last three seasons. He joins up with the Premier League’s bluntest attack, Burnley having scored 16 in total in 2021-22. However, it is thought the Dutch international’s aerial prowess can complement the Clarets’ direct approach and inspire a team with one league win all season and none since October (D5 L3).

Key Stat: Burnley have only scored two goals across their last six league games. However, five of these games were away from home. Conversely, the Clarets have found the net three times in two of their past three Premier League home games (3-3 vs Crystal Palace & 3-1 vs Brentford).

Watford – Hodgson appointment can transform defensive deficiencies?

At the time it felt like a seminal moment in their season, and it still could be but for all the wrong reasons. Watford’s 4-1 victory over Manchester United at Vicarage Road in November made headlines worldwide and even led to the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Red Devils manager. Eight Premier League outings later, however, and the Hornets have taken one point from the last 27 available, shipping 20 goals.

Oh, and they are now onto their third manager of the season. Claudio Ranieri’s tenure in Hertfordshire was brief but his demise was inevitable following the dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Norwich before the winter break. Roy Hodgson is the man tasked with steering the club to safety. It looks a shrewd appointment under the circumstances. A well-respected coach with a reputation for making his teams difficult to beat.

Key Stat: Watford are the only Premier League side this season who are yet to register a clean sheet. Subsequently, they are now four shy of equalling the all-time record for consecutive games conceding at least one goal, currently held by West Brom (34 games).

Burnley Vs Watford Betting Advice

Watford have won only one of their last 12 away league meetings (D4 L7) with Burnley, who are bidding to record a fourth clean sheet in a row against the Hornets. The latter recently appointed a manager in Roy Hodgson who will help improve upon a hopeless record in the defensive third of the pitch, with Watford conceding in each of their previous 30 matches in the competition. But will this fixture come too soon?

Burnley Vs Watford – Key Facts:

  • Should Burnley keep a clean sheet, it will mark their fourth in succession versus Watford who are looking to win for only the second time in their last 13 away league games against the Clarets (D4 L7).
  • Watford haven’t recorded a Premier League sheet in any of their previous 30 matches in the competition, which is now four shy from the all-time record.
  • However, no team has scored fewer goals in the English top-flight this season than Burnley (16 in 18 games). The Clarets have scored just twice in their last six league fixtures.

Only three players have more Premier League goals in 2021-22 than Emmanuel Dennis. The Watford forward will serve a one-game suspension at Turf Moor this weekend, though, in what is a huge loss for the visitors. However, new Watford boss Roy Hodgson will have benefited from the winter break, as he quickly sets about implementing his ideas and demands (basically a deep, compact shape). I think they can frustrate a Burnley side with one league win all season and only 16 scored in 18 matches.
