Preview: These sides occupy positions in the lower half of the La Liga table at the present time, which makes this a crucial fixture for both Celta Vigo, who are hosts on this occasion, and Real Valladolid. Last season’s corresponding encounter produced six goals shared equally between both sets of players; are we in for further entertainment at Estadio Municipal de Balaidos?

Celta Vigo Preview – Hosts targeting back-to-back victories?

Victory against the odds last weekend, scoring all three of their goals during the second half to collect three huge points away to Villarreal (1-3), has temporarily halted the slide at Celta Vigo (18th – W3 D3 L8, GF10 GA20). Five consecutive losses preceded that much-needed success and because of this, not even that rare triumph was enough to lift the club out of the La Liga relegation zone that has become their home for much of this campaign.

Unsurprisingly, Iago Iaspas was again at the centre of it all a week ago. The diminutive forward has often been the club’s saviour in recent times, particularly towards the end of the previous term when his return from injury seemed to invigorate the whole team. The 32-year-old netted a brace against Villarreal, taking his tally in the league for the season to five – that’s half of this team’s overall tally (10) in La Liga, highlighting his importance to the side.

Survival this season could depend on keeping their talisman fit and healthy. Big improvements are almost certainly going to be required at home as well. Celta Vigo have managed two wins from seven (W2 D1 L4) at Abanca-Balaidos, where just 7 out of a possible 21 points have so far been registered. This simply isn’t going to be conducive for another survival mission, particularly when goals – not scoring more than one goal in any home fixture thus far, and only 3 in total – continue to elude them.

Real Valladolid Preview – Visitors need a solution to leaking goals on the road?

In a difficult match-up, against a team battling at the top end of the table, Real Valladolid (14th – W4 D5 L4, GF14 GA18) were always going to have their work cut out registering a positive outcome versus Sevilla last weekend. The fact it was a careless penalty, conceded inside the opening ten minutes of the contest, that proved to be the difference between them achieving a positive result and not, will be a source of huge frustration for manager Sergio Gonzalez.

That result last time out – a first in front of their home fans this term – marked the first instance this season in which the Albivioletas have recorded back-to-back league defeats, having also lost 3-0 at Deportivo Alaves prior to the international break. In an admittedly tough schedule which included facing two teams currently in title contention, Valladolid have now lost three of the last four to leave them five points above the La Liga relegation zone. Hardly panic stations but a troubling period all the same.

A turnaround in fortunes could materialise here, playing a team several places below them in the standings, but performances away from home over the course of the season (W2 D2 L4) make that hardly a guarantee. However, their two away wins is as many as the opposition have so far managed at home. The last of those was back September, though, and since then it is one point from nine on their travels (D1 L2), scoring twice and for the loss of nine goals – though five did come in one outing at Barcelona.

Celta Vigo Vs Real Valladolid Key Facts:

  • Celta Vigo were on a dismal run of five straight defeats in La Liga before a brilliant 3-1 win away to Villarreal last week.
  • Real Valladolid, during an admittedly difficult run of fixtures, have slumped to three losses in four league games (W1 L3).
  • Both meetings in La Liga in 2018-19 would see a minimum of three goals in the game as well as both teams scoring, with the fixture at Celta Vigo finishing 3-3.

Betting Summary

Celta Vigo (3/4 Betfair) should have received a timely boost in confidence after securing a rare win last weekend, whereas Real Valladolid (4/1 Coral) could be reeling from a poor spell. It would be easy to reach conclusions based on the short term results from both but, over the course of the whole season, the visitors have shown better consistency during this term, hence why they are higher up in the La Liga table. For example, Celta Vigo have recorded as many home wins as Valladolid have away from home (2).

The recent head-to-head is very revealing, with five of the last six La Liga meetings producing Over 2.5 Goals. Last season was especially explosive, with Valladolid winning 2-1 as hosts and sharing the points in Vigo following a 3-3 draw. The respective forms wouldn’t necessarily suggest goals but at very reasonable odds, it could be worth chancing history repeating itself.
