Chelsea – More London derby spoils for Blues?

The Blues return from the international break with the aim of extending their longest winning streak in the league all season. Kai Havert’z deft touch and calm finish in the dying moments of their home game against Newcastle made it five wins on the spin, conceding once across an albeit favourable run of matches to keep them in third – too far from the leaders to be a credible threat but well clear of the battle for fourth.

With the FA Cup and Champions League still viable routes to further trophy spoils, this could yet develop into another highly successful campaign under Thomas Tuchel. His side have enjoyed a particular fondness for London derbies. In the seven such match-ups already played this season, Chelsea have six wins, all of them to nil, and lost just the once. Succumbing 3-2 to West Ham at the London Stadium in December.

Key Stat: After one win in six Premier League home games (W1 D5), Chelsea are now seeking their third consecutive league victory at Stamford Bridge. Furthermore, five of seven home league wins this season saw them either cover a -2 goal handicap or win to nil.

Brentford – Toney to continue purple patch?

An enforced break owing to international fixtures came at an inopportune moment for Brentford who were back to something close to their early season form only a matter of weeks ago. The Bees were unfortunate to lose 2-1 at Leicester City in their most recent encounter, creating the better of the chances at King Power Stadium, but made no mistake in dispatching the struggling duo of Burnley and Norwich.

The reintroduction of unquestionably the club’s star player has had a big impact. Striker Ivan Toney was ostracised following an off-pitch indiscretion, leading to an eight-game winless drought (D1 L7) over January and February, but has returned to the side with a bang. Last season’s scoring phenomenon in the second tier scored all five in those aforementioned wins and could be a handful in this West London derby.

Key Stat: After making a four-match unbeaten start in Premier League away games, in which they conceded only two goals, Brentford have lost eight of 11 subsequent away league games (W1 D2 L8). However, at 12 games, the Bees are currently enduring the longest wait for an away clean sheet in England’s top tier.

Chelsea Vs Brentford Betting Advice

It took a scruffy Ben Chilwell finish for Chelsea to see off Brentford in the reverse fixture, a game the European champions were battered in (xG from that game: BRE 2.16 – 0.31). Naturally we can expect a stronger, more fluid showing from the Blues back at Stamford Bridge, where they have lost one league game all season (W7 D5 L1). Yet I suspect, as was the case in that reverse, it won’t be all to their liking.

Chelsea Vs Brentford – Key Facts:

  • A 1-0 win for Chelsea at the Brentford Community Stadium earlier in the season extended the Blues unbeaten run against the Bees to eight matches (W7 D1).
  • Chelsea went into the international break having won each of their past five Premier League games, conceding once. They sit third in the table (W17 D8 L3).
  • Brentford boast wins in two of their last three Premier League games (L1) and are enjoying their longest scoring run (3 games) since November.

Brentford cashed in on a favourable run of games before the break, picking up six points from nine whilst averaging a healthy 1.94 xG. It almost goes without saying that a visit to Stamford Bridge is a massive step up again, in particular for a side with eight defeats in its last eleven away games. Chelsea were terrific before the break (five straight wins), however, longer-term, it is just three wins in eight (W3 D5) as league hosts.
