Chelsea Preview – Lampard won’t want his side to loosen grip on fourth?

Victory on Sunday, coming from a goal down to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park, strengthened their position within the top four as Chelsea (4th – W15 D6 L9) moved five points clear of Manchester United in fifth place. It effectively widens the margin for error ahead of Thursday’s mouthwatering clash against the team currently in second. A Man City team who were left stunned at Stamford Bridge last season, succumbing 2-0.

After digging deep into their energy reserves to fight back from 1-0 down on Sunday, Chelsea would extend their unbeaten run in the league to four, having won three of those. The last team to beat Frank Lampard’s men being the other Manchester outfit, with Man Utd 2-0 victors at The Bridge in February. That one of five home defeats in 2019/20 (W7 D3 L5), one more than has so far been tallied on the road (4).

Recent home performances have been more encouraging, though, scoring at least twice in four of the last five (W3 D1 L1) whilst winning each of the last two against Tottenham (2-1) and Everton (4-0). Olivier Giroud on target in both, and the Frenchman seems almost certain to start here after playing a pivotal role during his team’s current unbeaten run, scoring in three of his last four appearances.

Manchester City Preview – First true test since the restart awaits?

Pep Guardiola’s men have enjoyed two run outs since the Premier League returned. In the end, neither were much of a contest. Both Arsenal (3-0) and Burnley (5-0) swept aside with ease at the Etihad by a rampant Manchester City (2nd – W19 D3 L7) team who clearly mean business on their return to action, despite having already fallen by the wayside in this season’s Premier League title race.

The Citizens, now 20 points adrift of Liverpool but nine clear of Leicester in second, seem destined to end the season where they are. It makes sense, therefore, for Guardiola to utilise his lavish squad in the remaining fixtures, making no fewer than eight changes for the beatdown of Burnley. Among those not to start were Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling, which is a frightening prospect for Chelsea with both set to return for Thursday.

However, Sergio Aguero seems likely to miss out after picking up an injury in the last game. Meanwhile, Man City are preparing for their first outing in the league since suffering a 2-0 defeat in the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford. That a second away defeat in three such games, having also lost by the same scoreline at Tottenham, and their fifth of the campaign overall (W9 D1 L5 away from home).

Chelsea Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

This season, Chelsea have beaten just two currently in the top half of the table at home, while their record versus the traditional ‘Big Six’ at Stamford Bridge reads W1 D1 L2. Fortunately for them, Man City haven’t excelled in these match-ups either, with their away record versus the ‘Big Six’ an uninspiring W1 L3. That sole win coming at Arsenal. Basically, this isn’t as straightforward as simply picking the visitors.

Chelsea Vs Manchester City – Key Facts

  • After overcoming Aston Villa on Sunday, Chelsea are now unbeaten in the Premier League in four games (W3 D1) and have lost once at home in the last five (W3 D1 L1).
  • Six points gained, eight goals scored and none conceded so far from Man City since the Premier League restart. However, they have lost two of their last three away fixtures.
  • A 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge last season ended a run of two successive defeats for Chelsea at home to Man City, who were 2-1 winners at Etihad Stadium in November.

Nevertheless, how often do we get the opportunity to invest in a Pep Guardiola team, which is likely to be revitalised by the returns of both De Bruyne and Sterling, at close to even money? I suspect there will be goals as well. Chelsea have scored in 10 of 15 home games this season, scoring at least two in four of the last five in West London, while Man City have done so in 13 of their 15 away contests so far.
