Coleraine Preview – Can Coleraine upset their visitors?
By finishing runners-up to Linfield at the end of the Northern Irish Premiership season last term, Thursday’s hosts, Coleraine, qualified for the early qualifying rounds of the Europa League and having already disposed of San Marino outfit, La Fiorita, in the preliminary round followed by a 1st qualifying round win over Slovenian side, Maribor, Coleraine will be in reasonably confident mood.
However, Coleraine needed a penalty shoot-out win against Maribor to qualify for this upcoming tie against Motherwell but results overall have been impressive for the hosts as they’ve won 13 of their last 14 matches in all competitions.
Coleraine have also won their last six home matches on the trot but they have had very limited exposure to the Europa League where they’ve won two of their five ties to date at home with wins against Uniao de Leira (back in 2003) and La Fiorita, and they’ll be up against it here when Motherwell visit.

Motherwell head into this upcoming 2nd qualifying round tie against Coleraine in confident mood as the visitors are on the back of a morale-boosting 1-0 home win against St Johnstone in the weekend’s Scottish Premier League, and they’ve also got previous form against Irish opponents in the Europa League too.
A crushing 5-1 home win over Glentoran in the 1st qualifying round of the Europa League saw ‘Well progress to this tie against Coleraine, although previous results at this level have left a lot to be desired for the Scottish club after losing seven of their preceding eight ties in this competition.
Motherwell have also failed to win any of their last five away ties at this level, losing four of these with defeats at OB, Levante, Krasnodar and Stjarnan, but it’s ‘horses for courses’ and Motherwell’s quality should shine through here.
