Crystal Palace – Viera’s men eyeing up eighth game unbeaten?

We knew last week was a little bit special (there were 41 goals across all ten weekend fixtures, for an average of 4.1 per game) when Turf Moor produced a thriller, or should we say put on a scoring clinic. There were positives for both managers to be had from that game but for Patrick Viera and Crystal Palace, a tinge of disappointment no doubt after seeing their winning run halted by a 3-3 draw at Burnley.

The Eagles had won their previous two matches 2-0, following up that stunning success away to Manchester City with a comprehensive win at home to Wolves, so were aiming for three in a row last time. It wasn’t to be, despite taking the lead on two separate occasions and scoring three for the first time under their new manager. What that result does do, though, is stretch their unbeaten league run to seven (W2 D5).

That was a fifth league game in the last six scoring two or more, having netted at least once in nine of the last ten. Belgian striker Christian Benteke has four goals in five games while Conor Gallagher continues to attracting admiring glances, with no English midfielder contributing towards more goals (seven) in the Premier League this season. If Viera can sort out the defending, Palace might be on to something.

Aston Villa – Can Gerrard maintain winning start?

This exciting new era under Liverpool’s former talismanic midfielder, Steven Gerrard, begun on a winning note as Aston Villa put a run of five successive Premier League defeats to bed with a 2-0 win over Brighton at Villa Park. In truth, there wasn’t a huge amount between the sides. In fact, Villa had done next to nothing prior to scoring twice inside the closing six minutes of normal time to snatch three vital points.

Those points were enough to lift the Villains four clear of the Premier League’s bottom three ahead of a daunting set of fixtures. Following this weekend’s trip to Selhurst Park – where Aston Villa have lost five of their past six league visits (L1) – are games against three of last season’s top five. So it was important Gerrard’s men got off to the best possible start, as things appear tricky in the short-term.

Gerrard’s next port of call will be staving off a fourth straight away league defeat. Villa have been wretched on their travels so far, losing five of six road outings (W1), having found the net just three times in the last five of those. However, that is now three goals in as many matches for Ollie Watkins, who is showing glimpses of the form that saw him net 16 in his debut top-flight campaign last time around.

Crystal Palace Vs Aston Villa Betting Advice

During his time in Scotland, arguably the biggest takeaway from Steven Gerrard’s time at Rangers was how he transformed the team defensively. To have seen his new team record a clean sheet first time out will have been especially pleasing therefore. We need to see plenty more, however, before we can start to place out trust in a back line which has kept just three clean sheets all season.

Crystal Palace Vs Aston Villa – Key Facts:

  • Following a seven-match unbeaten spell (W2 D5), Crystal Palace remain in ninth place in the Premier League, three points above Aston Villa who occupy 15th.
  • Crystal Palace are still to suffer a home defeat in the league this season (W2 D4). The Eagles will be confident of preserving that run having won five of the past six home league meetings between the sides.
  • Although Aston Villa banked a first clean sheet late September last weekend, they must be wary of a Palace side which has scored 2+ in all but one of their last six matches.

A trip to Selhurst Park will be a huge test for Gerrard and his Aston Villa defence in particular. Crystal Palace are in scintillating goalscoring form at the moment, scoring in each of their past seven league games, in which they remained unbeaten throughout, and at least twice in five of the past six. Unfortunately, the hosts aren’t the most sound either, with five of that seven-game unbeaten sequence resulting in scoring draws.
