Preview: After a promising start to his reign as Crystal Palace manager, Patrick Viera has hit a road bump, going his last four Premier League games without winning. Can the visit of an Everton side without an away win since August inspire the Eagles to banish not only their recent slump, but their wretched record in this particular fixture?

Crystal Palace – Return to Selhurst Park can spark turnaround in fortunes?

Not for the first time this season, Crystal Palace manager Patrick Viera could glean positives from his team’s latest display. Astute defensively, they limited a Manchester United side that lined up with four attackers to half-chances throughout the contest at Old Trafford, and arguably created the game’s best opening through Jordan Ayew’s point-blank miss. But those efforts went unrewarded once more.

That was their second successive 1-0 defeat, going down to a late Raphinha penalty before that at Leeds, and third loss on the spin having alsobeen beaten 2-1 at home by Aston Villa. For context, they had only tasted defeat twice across their opening twelve games of this season. It is their longest run without a point since July 2020, when they lost seven consecutive top-flight games during Project Restart.

This is the first real low of the Viera era. The former midfield great can, however, lean on the backing of the Selhurst Park faithful who have seen enough to believe this lull in results is merely a blip. Palace hadn’t lost any of their first six matches at home (W2 D4) prior to the Villa loss last time out. Patience may be the order of the day, though: nine of the ten goals they’ve scored at home this season were in the second-half.

Everton – Second straight victory or more away misery?

Whereas their next opponents come into Sunday’s contest desperately trying to arrest a run of defeats, Everton arrive at Selhurst Park – a ground they have not lost at in the Premier League in their past ten visits (W5 D5), since a 1-0 loss in October 1994 – on something of a high having recently snapped a wretched sequence of their own. Coming from behind in their latest encounter to beat Arsenal 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Monday night’s victory against the Gunners, courtesy of goals from Richarlison and Demarai Gray, saw Everton rally from behind and finally produce a winning display, ending a barren eight-game period in which they had collected just two points out of a possible 24. It was also the first time Rafael Benitez’s men scored more than once in the competition since a 2-0 win at home to Norwich on 25 September.

Building on this newfound positivity isn’t going to be straightforward though. Everton have won once on their travels all season (D2 L4), against Brighton in August when Benitez had a near full complement of players to choose from, and are coming off three consecutive away defeats at Brentford, Man City and Wolves. Moreover, Benitez hasn’t fared all that well in the English capital, losing on 12 of his last 17 visits.

Crystal Palace Vs Everton Betting Advice

Whereas Crystal Palace are in the midst of their poorest spell of the season, picking up one of the last twelve points, Everton should arrive with a spring in their step following Monday’s hard-fought victory over Arsenal which put to bed an eight-match winless run. This is also a fixture that appeals more to the visitors. Everton are unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League meetings with Palace, who have won none of the last ten as hosts.

Crystal Palace Vs Everton – Key Facts:

  • Everton are currently enjoying a 13-game unbroken Premier League sequence without losing to Crystal Palace, winning five and losing none of the last ten at Selhurst Park.
  • However, the Toffees aren’t faring nearly as well on their travels at present, losing four of their last five away league games including each of the last three.
  • Conversely, Crystal Palace remain one of the toughest teams to beat at Selhurst Park this season. Patrick Viera’s men have lost one of seven Premier League home games under his tenure (W2 D4).

This season though, it is Palace with the stronger underlying data. Especially here at Selhurst Park where they average 1.6 xGF and an impressive 0.7 xGA for the season, having lost once at home in 2021-22 (W2 D4). Compare that to Everton, who are coming off three successive away defeats having lost four of their last five away, and have maintained a negative process (1.3 xGF, 1.4 xGA) on the road all season.
