Preview: The final batch of Premier League fixtures for November kick-offs with Newcastle United and their visit to Crystal Palace on Friday, with both sides coming into the game on the back of disappointing results last time around. Last season, though, it was the home side who prevailed in this fixture, Patrick van Aanholt securing a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace Preview – No Zaha, no hope?

Roy Hodgson took his Crystal Palace (W4 D1 L4) team to Turf Moor on Monday having recently thrashed Leeds 4-1 at home to make it four wins in eight Premier League games. As for their opponents, Burnley were second from bottom and without a win or a goal at home all season. That Palace became the first team to lose to the Lancashire side really did speak volumes about their performance on the day.

It wasn’t until late in the game that Palace carved out their one and only ‘big chance’, which was ultimately spurned by substitute Christian Benteke, as they toiled in the absence of Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian is set to miss the visit of Newcastle as he continues to self-isolate, and this is a monumental blow. Since his return to the club in 2014, Palace have lost 20 of the 28 Premier League games that Zaha has missed.

Following their 1-0 defeat last time out, Crystal Palace have now failed to score in three of their five away outings this season. Compare that to their record at Selhurst Park, where they have scored in all four such matches – albeit just the once in three – whilst registering seven points from a possible twelve (W2 D1 L1). However, with a Zaha shaped hole in the side, could their first home blank be in the offing?

Newcastle United Preview – A fit Wilson key to any success in South London?

Coming into this game Newcastle (W3 D2 L4) have suffered successive league defeats for the first time this season, losing 2-0 to Southampton and Chelsea either side of the international break. The latter being the latest, as Frank Lampard’s rapidly improving outfit easily got the better of Steve Bruce’s uninspiring troops who have now netted no more than once in six of nine Premier League games in 2020/21.

Much like the team they come up against on Friday, the Magpies are also ruing the absence of some important first-team members. None more so than Callum Wilson, the former Bournemouth striker accounting for six of the ten league goals Newcastle have scored so far this season, including both in their eye-catching 2-1 win over Everton at St James’ Park at the beginning of the month.

Away from home, Steve Bruce’s men have been unimpressive since their 2-0 victory over West Ham on the opening weekend. Three subsequent away encounters against Tottenham, Wolves and Southampton garnering a total of two points (both of which were incredibly fortunate), as many goals scored, and an average xG figure of just 0.54. Therefore this could be another difficult watch for supporters.

Crystal Palace Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

Last week was another prime example of how making bold predictions pre-match can be a risky proposition in the current climate. None of us were made aware beforehand of Wilfried Zaha’s predicament, yet it is common knowledge that Crystal Palace struggle without their influential winger. His continued absence, therefore, raises the obvious question as to where the host’s attacking impetus will now come from?

Crystal Palace Vs Newcastle United – Key Facts:

  • Crystal Palace have scored in all four home Premier League games this season (W2 D1 L1), with four of their seven goals from these fixtures coming in one game (4-1 vs Leeds).
  • Newcastle had scored in each of their first three away Premier League games (W1 D2), before suffering a 2-0 loss away to Southampton in their most recent away outing.
  • Three of the past five league meetings at Selhurst Park have ended in a stalemate, with all but one producing no more than two goals.

Fortunate for a Zaha-less Palace, their upcoming opponents have personnel concerns of their own. Newcastle are sweating on the fitness of leading scorer Callum Wilson and without him in their ranks, a side boasting only two goals in their previous three away outings seems primed to come unstuck. Particularly with their record here at Selhurst Park being extremely poor, losing on two of their previous five league visits (D3 L2).
