Crystal Palace Preview – Can Palace improve consistency?
Crystal Palace’s season in the Premier League last term ebbed and flowed as Roy Hodgson’s side showed they were capable of picking up some decent results but their campaign ended in dismal fashion as The Eagles slumped to an eight-match winless streak to finally finish in a disappointing 14th place on the Premier League ladder.
Palace had earlier promised better things as the hosts put together a 10-match sequence with just one defeat from early December through to mid-January, picking up notable wins against Burnley and West Ham and holding the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City to 1-1 and 2-2 draws respectively.
Three defeats on the trot were then followed by another promising stint of results as Palace won four on the trot but they were unable to sustain this form and lost seven of their subsequent eight matches which would have left manager, Roy Hodgson, scratching his head just a little.
With just two wins from their last nine matches at home though, Palace look ready for the taking here…
Southampton Preview – Can Saints pick up where they left off?
Southampton rounded off a successful top flight campaign last term with a solid and impressive seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier league to achieve a respectable mid-table finish with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side grabbing 11th place.
It was no less than Southampton deserved as the visitors picked up four wins from these seven matches which included victories over Watford, Manchester City, Bournemouth and Sheffield United while also picking up points in draws with Everton, Manchester United and Brighton.
The south coast club actually performed better on the road than at their St Mary’s Stadium as Saints picked up nine wins on their travels which was bettered only by Liverpool (14) and Manchester City (11) and along with being unbeaten in their final five away matches last term, they also registered a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park against Palace back in January.
Striker, Danny Ings (22 goals) was instrumental in Southampton’s impressive season last term and he could cause havoc once again in south-east London on Saturday.
