Powerful Yastremska can pounce on Kerber

19-year-old Yastremska is knocking on the door of the top twenty rankings on the WTA and is one of the biggest rising stars of the game. She was out at Brisbane last weekend where she was stopped in the first round by Kiki Bertens across three sets.

That was not the easiest of starts to the year for Yastremska. But she bounced back well in her Adelaide opener to claim a straight-sets victor over Timea Babos. She forced a first set bagel on her opponent as well, as Yastremska came firing out of the gates.

Yastremska broke through big time last year on the Tour, claiming two WTA titles (three overall in her short career) and made it to the third round of the Australian Open on her debut in the main draw.

Head to head

This will be the first match between Kerber and Yastremska

Can experience get Kerber through?

Angelique Kerber opened her Adelaide campaign with a straight-sets victory over Qiang Wang. It was an easy enough contest for Kerber, which is always a good way to start a tournament. She won 6-1 6-3 against her Chinese opponent.

Like Yastremska, Kerber was a first-round faller at the Brisbane International last week. It was a bizarre exit for the German as well in a match which she had been red-hot favourite to win against Australian veteran Sam Stosur.

Just back in November, Kerber did have a change of coach. That was a natural reaction as 2019 was a below-par year from the German. She badly struggled in the Majors last year as well. Maybe it was a carrying from that.

Dayana Yastremska v Angelique Kerber Prediction and tip

The energy that young Yastremska has is bountiful and she can account for Kerber in this contest. Kerber’s failure in two tie-breaks against Sam Stosur in Brisbane last week was strange indeed.

She’s not on her game and may be sent packing early. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a confident Kerber take the court. Yastremska 2-0 correct score at 7/4* (betting odds taken from Betfair on January 13th, 2020 at 2:23 pm)
