Preview: The last manager at Borussia Dortmund to lose three consecutive Bundesliga home games was Jurgen Klopp, in the 2013/14 season. That is the record Lucien Favre is keen to avoid on Saturday when a Stuttgart side unbeaten on their travels in 2020/21 visit Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Dortmund Preview – Can Favre find solution for domestic dip?

Last week’s 1-1 scoreline in Frankfurt may have been their first Bundesliga stalemate in nearly a year, ending a run of 27 games without a drawn encounter in the league, but it was the fourth instance this season in which Borussia Dortmund (W6 D1 L3) dropped crucial points in their ongoing pursuit of the leaders. On another day, and had a certain someone been around to convert their chances, the outcome might have been different.

The Black & Yellows shaded the contest at Deutsche Bank Park (xG: FRA 1.15 – 1.65 DOR) but were reliant on a wonderful effort from USMNT’s Gio Reyna for salvaging a point from a contest they fell behind in with less than ten minutes gone. Dortmund have now gone two Bundesliga games without winning, having lost 2-1 at home to FC Koln in their preceding fixture, for the first time since October 2019.

Here at Signal Iduna Park, meanwhile, BVB have lost each of their previous two league games – that barely believable loss to Koln, who were previously winless in 18 top-flight matches, following a harsh 3-2 defeat in the first of this season’s Der Klassikers to Bayern. Lucien Favre’s side begun 2020/21 with three successive home wins, all to nil, but are now striving to avoid recording a third successive home defeat.

Stuttgart Preview – Unbeaten run set to stretch to six?

Only six managers in the history of the Bundesliga had avoided losing any of their first five away games in the competition. Stuttgart (W3 D5 L2) ensured Pellegrino Mattarazzo joined an elusive group when they went to the Weserstadion in the last round and left with a 2-1 scoreline, all three points and a rise to eighth in the standings – taking them within two of the European places and five shy of Dortmund’s tally of 19.

Claiming 11 of 15 points available to them on the road so far this season, Stuttgart are yet to lose on their travels since earning promotion in the summer with only Bayern (12) and Bayer Leverkusen (14) bettering their tally in away games. Only the former, meanwhile, have netted more in said matches than Mattarazzo’s men, who have scored in all five away matches so far having netted at least twice in all but one.

Saturday’s trip represents their sternest away examination of the campaign thus far, though. Particularly as Signal Iduna Park has proven to be a nightmare venue over the years for Die Schwaben. Since a slender 1-0 victory in February 2007, eleven subsequent visits to Dortmund in the Bundesliga have garnered zero wins, five draws but six defeats – including each of the last three, which were all by two clear goals.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Stuttgart Betting Advice

Dortmund‘s record at home to Stuttgart is very good, having won four of the last five here, including each of the last three since 2013, and they will need that to remain so after seeing their form dip in recent weeks. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw on the road against Eintracht Frankfurt made it two defeats in the last four (W1 D1 L2), though they would come from behind to win in Russia on Tuesday, beating Zenit 2-1.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Stuttgart – Key Facts:

  • When playing at home against promoted sides, as Stuttgart are, Borussia Dortmund are 13-games unbeaten having scored at least three in their last six such home games.
  • Only Bayern Munich have registered more Bundesliga away goals this season than Stuttgart, who are among three sides yet to lose an away fixture in 2020/21 (W3 D2).
  • Dortmund have lost only one of their past 16 Bundesliga games versus Stuttgart, and none of the last eleven held on home soil (W6 D5) – winning the last three.

The continued absence of Erling Haaland until at least January is a massive blow for Dortmund and their immediate chances, with the Norwegian having enjoyed a sensational start to the campaign. Dortmund have still notched in their last three matches without him in the side, and all of the last 15 in league and Europe. With Stuttgart netting in all five away, with two-goal hauls in four, there should be goals.
