There is an intriguing second-round match at WTA Doha with fifth seed Elina Svitolina lining up against American youngster Amanda Ainisimova. Svitolina received a bye through from the first round, while Anismova had a good match win over Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round.

Svitolina needs a strong start to get form going

World number seven Elina Svitolina in search of some form. 2020 has not gotten going for her at all.

There was a first-round exit at the Brisbane International in her first tournament of the new year. That was followed by a third-round loss at the Australian Open against Garbine Muguruza.

A poor quarter-final exit in Thailand in a really weak field was then followed by a first-round exit in Dubai last week in Premier level action.

So the Ukrainian hasn’t found her groove this year and has only won around 62% of her service games through the season.

That’s not high enough at all and she is starting to look a little low on confidence. Svitolina though is a very intelligent player, even though the power isn’t there.

She is the second-highest seed in the third quarter of the 2020 WTA Doha draw behind fourth seed Belinda Bencic.

Our betting prediction:

There has only been one previous meeting between Svitolina and Anisimova. Svitolina won that meeting which was in 2018 at Cincinnati in straight sets.

Given that she is opening her after a good rest because of her early exit last week and is facing Anisimova who isn’t in great form herself, there is a good chance for Svitolina here.

Anisimova looks to end losing streak

18-year-old American Amanda Anisimova has lost her last two matches on the WTA. The first of these was in the opening round of the 2020 Australian Open.

More recently her next defeat was at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championship. Anisimova bowed out against Barbora Strycova in the first round in Dubai.

That was after having had a good opening tournament for the season when she went to the semifinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland where she lost to Serena Williams.

Anisimova has only managed to win 55% of her service games throughout the course of the season, winning only 51% of service points.

The American is ranked 29th in the world at the moment and she is one of a very strong crop of young players coming through.

This will be the debut for Anisimova in Doha. There has been a trend in her recent matches. Three of her last four matches played this season have gone to three sets.
