The third round action at the Australian Open hots up with a big clash between Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and Spain’s Garbine Muguruza. Neither will have been looking forward to such a tough clash as early as the third round, but a big name is going to have to fall by the wayside at Melbourne Park.

Svitolina can hold her nerve and reach the fourth round
Elina Svitolina looks for all the world a complete player at times. She is ranked fifth in the world and her stock in the Grand Slams has been rising. Last year she made the semis of Wimbledon and the US Open after a quarter final at the Australian Open. She has made the quarter final exits in her last two appearances at the Australian Open.
So the consistency has been there from Svitolina on the big stage. The year didn’t get off to a great start for her as she slipped out of WTA Brisbane in the first round against an inspired Danielle Collins. However, the 25 year old has seven WTA career singles title and she has been knocking on the door of Slam success. She’s not the heaviest of hitters and that is often where she gets tripped up. She has a superb defensive game however.
Svitolina does lead the head to head 6-4 over Muguruza. The most recent meeting they had was in Wuhan last year with Svitolina winning in straight sets. Each of the last three meetings between the duo (Svitolina 2-1) have been settled in straight sets. It has been Svitolina who has come out on top in four of the last five meetings, the one time she didn’t in that sequence was away from the hard court at the French Open.
Muguruza better away from the hard court
Garbine Muguruza is currently ranked 32 in the world. With her having struggled to get the better of Svitolina in recent meetings, the Spaniard is the match underdog. It feels like such a long time ago she climbed her way to the number 1 ranking in the world, which was actually only back towards the end of 2017.
That was the year which Muguruza won Wimbledon, the second Slam success after winning at Roland Garros in 2016. Murugurza is not naturally a great hard court player. From 14 previous entries into the Australian Open and US Open tournaments combined, she has made it to the quarter finals just once.

In contrast, in the other two Slams of Wimbledon and Roland Garros, she has two titles, a losing finalist spot, a semi final and two quarter finals. So far at the Australian Open 2020 it has not been plain sailing for her either, needing three sets to win both of her matches. In her opener she shockingly dropped the first set 6-0 against Shelby Rogers before turning the match around. She may have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro during the off-season, but she may find beating Svitolina too tall of an order.
