Everton Preview – Leaky backline undermining attacking effort?

It wasn’t their most convincing performance of the season, but it could turn out to be one of their most important as Everton (W5 D1 L3) returned to winning ways at Craven Cottage last week. Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbing two of the three goals on the day, both first-time finishes from close range, which are fast becoming his trademark, in a hard-fought 3-2 victory over a Fulham side who made them sweat.

The return of Richarlison from suspension undoubtedly ignited the Everton attack last time out, laying on the first goal inside a minute as the Brazilian set the tone nice and early. By the end, however, they were collectively holding on, ultimately relieved when the final whistle eventually blew on an absorbing contest that was end-to-end throughout. The negative, meanwhile, being the goals conceded.

Everton have now let in two or more in six successive league games for the first time since October 2008. An alarming trend ahead of a formidable schedule, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester and Man City all to come before the year is out. Conversely, their 19 goals in nine games is the fourth-highest tally in the league, boding well ahead of hosting a Leeds defence which has shipped the second-most (17) overall.

Leeds United Preview – White won’t keep misfiring?

Last week at home to Arsenal, Leeds (W3 D2 L4) did everything well bar the finishing. This profligacy hadn’t been in evidence in the early part of the season, when netting hauls of three or more in three of their first six league games, but has slowly crept into their recent displays. They have since managed a combined two goals across the previous three fixtures. The latest, however, was arguably their most frustrating.

Quite how The Whites were unable to convert their dominance with the ball, a host of gilt-edged chances or the numerical advantage enjoyed against Arsenal at Elland Road is still mystifying. Marcelo Bielsa will have been enthused by the performance, which was clearly an improvement on the back-to-back 4-1 losses sustained against Crystal Palace and Leicester, but frustrated with the lack of cutting edge on show.

Leeds have now taken just one of the last nine points since delivering an accomplished performance in their 3-0 win at high-flying Aston Villa last month. That one of two away wins this season, the other a rather more gritty affair in Sheffield, having also shipped four in defeats to Liverpool and Crystal Palace. Furthermore, a goal for Patrick Bamford would see him maintain his 100% scoring record on the road this season (7 in 4).

Everton Vs Leeds Betting Advice

Over 2.5 Goals has occurred in 78% of Premier League matches involving Everton in 2020/21, a figure which climbs to 100% at Goodison Park, where all four encounters featured at least four goals as well as both teams scoring. Leeds are a lot less unreliable on this front, seeing 56% of their contests this season return three or more goals, though this rises to 75% away from home, having scored in all four such fixtures.

Everton Vs Leeds – Key Facts:

  • Victory away to Fulham last week, winning 3-2 thanks to a brace from the division’s leading scorer Calvert Lewin (10 goals), halted a four-game winless run for Everton.
  • Despite dominating proceedings at home to Arsenal a week ago, Leeds were unable to find a breakthrough as they failed to score for only the second time since promotion.
  • Everton are unbeaten in their last thirteen home meetings with Leeds in the English to-flight, however, the last of those was a 4-0 success way back in 2003.

Put simply, there should be goals on Merseyside. Both are adept at carving out high-quality scoring opportunities while neither have convinced in defence, with Everton conceding at least twice in their past six league encounters and Leeds allowing four in two of their four away fixtures. It all points towards an enthralling contest on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Patrick Bamford have scored a combined 17 league goals this season and are around 6/1 to score in a Betfair Same Game Multi.
