Fenerbahce Preview – Can Fenerbahce open account?
After having progressed through the earlier qualifying rounds of the Europa League, Turkish hosts, Fenerbahce, have been rewarded with a place in the group stage of this competition and they will be looking to get off the mark straight away when they play host to Ukrainian visitors, Dynamo Kyiv, on Thursday evening.
Fenerbahce had previously accounted for Czech Republic side, Slovacko, 4-1 on aggregate before posting an impressive 6-1 victory over Austrian outfit, Austria Vienna, in the play-off tie, while results overall at this level have also been encouraging for the hosts.
Fenerbahce have lost just two of their last 12 ties in the Europa League, both being losses to Greek side, Olympiakos in home and away defeats but within this period of results, Fenerbahce have also picked up six wins in the process.
Form on home soil has been even more impressive though as Fenerbahce have suffered just two defeats out of their previous 21 ties in this competition and picking up 13 wins, so the hosts will be confident about their chances on Thursday,
Defender Nazim Sangare is a long-term absentee due to a cruciate ligament injury, while fellow defender Aziz is struggling with a groin injury but otherwise, Fenerbahce manager, Jorge Jesus, has a fully fit squad to choose from.
Dynamo Kyiv Preview – Can Dynamo Kyiv take second chance?
Dynamo Kyiv’s hopes of reaching the group stage of the Champions League were dashed by Portuguese club, Benfica, at the final hurdle of qualifying as the Ukrainians were handed a heavy 5-0 defeat on aggregate to send them into the Europa League group stage instead where they face a tough opening game on Matchday 1.
Ironically, Dynamo Kyiv overcame their upcoming opponents on Thursday, Fenerbahce, in the earlier qualifying round of the Champions League with the Ukraine side winning 2-1 in extra time to secure a 2-1 win on aggregate, before accounting for Sturm Graz 3-1 on aggregate in the next round.
However, following the emphatic loss to Benfica, the visitors find themselves locking horns with Fenerbahce once again, this time in the secondary European competition but the result could be a very different one this time around.
Following the Benfica loss, Dynamo Kyiv have lost their subsequent two domestic league matches as well, suffering defeats to Dnipro and Zorya respectively, while on the Europa League stage, Kyiv have picked up just two wins from their last 12 ties overall.
Defender Popov is sidelined with a shoulder injury while forward Supryaha is expected to be absent with a hip injury.
