Fiorentina Preview – Can Fiorentina reach the group stage of a European competition for the first time in five years?
Fiorentina kick started their Serie A season at the weekend with a 3-2 win over newly-promoted Cremonese, with Vincenzo Italiano’s men picking up where they left off last term. They did require a goal with virtually the last kick of the ball but it was three points and it set them up for this crucial two-legged affair against Twente for place in the group stages of the Europa Conference League. They haven’t featured in any continental match since the Europa League back in 2017.
The Florence club finished seventh last season which was very good going considering the likes of Atalanta and Sassuolo were below them and a marked improvement on the 13th finish the season before.

Twente were regular competitors in European competition between 2007 and 2015 – featuring in one tournament or another in eight of the nine years. The club were given a three year ban from all European football due to financial issues and it means this season’s participation in the Europa Conference League will end a seven year wait. Ron Jans is the man who has steered them back to this level.
Jans took over in 2020, and led them to a fourth place finish in his second year in charge. They were just three points off third place Feyenoord which indicates just how encouraging a season it was for them.

The start of this campaign has also been encouraging. Twente have won both there league games – scoring four goals and conceding none – whilst thrashing Serbian side Cukaricki 7-2 on aggregate. Jans will know this is going to be the most challenging test of the season, though.
Michel Vlap scored in both legs in the last Europa League qualifier and is re-establishing himself back in the Netherlands following a difficult spell in Belgium and then Germany. Vlap scored five from midfield last season and is on his way to bettering that this time around.
