Frankfurt – Free-scoring Eagles can soar once more?
The Eagles are my favourite team to follow at the moment. It helps that they are winning regularly, aided in no small part by the prolific goalscoring exploits of one of Europe’s hottest strikers. Andre Silva brought up his 17th Bundesliga goal of 2020-21 with the third in last Sunday’s 3-1 win away at Hoffenheim, confirming all three points for Frankfurt who climbed into the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Portugal international Silva has nine goals from eight league outings since the turn of the year, a figure unsurpassed in Germany, and has found the net in five of his last six league appearances. His team-mates are benefiting greatly. Frankfurt (W9 D2 L2) are currently nine league games unbeaten (W7 D2), registering 23 from a possible 27 points since last losing at third-in-the-table Wolfsburg on 11 December.
Equally impressive, meanwhile, is the sheer volume of goals being scored. Leaders Bayern are the only team capable of boasting superior figures than their 41 from 20 games, the Eagles having scored at least twice in each of their past nine Bundesliga outings – only the second instance of them achieving such a feat. However, Frankfurt are out on their own when it comes to most points collected in 2021 (19/21).
Koln – Recent resurgence hints at bold showing?
Ordinarily, standing toe-to-toe with a side that has triumphed in all but one of its last seven Bundesliga matches would pose a daunting task for even the very best, let alone a Cologne outfit two places and only four points clear of trouble. Yet this fixture should hold no fear for The Billy Goats (W5 D6 L9), whose record against Frankfurt is formidable having recorded more away wins against them than any other side.
In fact, only the perennial German champions, Bayern Munich, have won more often away from home versus Frankfurt than Koln, who are unbeaten across their last three head-to-head encounters (W1 D2). Including a 4-2 victory here at Deutsche Bank-Park last season. They had previously lost on all four league visits, suggesting that recent history paints a rather more ominous outlook on their chances.
The mood in camp will be high, though, after claiming local bragging rights in last Saturday’s clash in Gladbach. That their third win in four, with victories over struggling duo Schalke and Arminia Bielefeld sandwiching a 3-0 reverse away to Hoffenheim. All four featured an abundance of goals, with at least three in each, meaning another end-to-end encounter potentially beckons against such free-scoring hosts.
