UEFA Europa League
Pick: Eintracht Frankfurt or Draw/Both Teams to Score

Preview: Both teams are bidding to reach their first European finals in more than 40 years, but it is the Germans in control at the midway stage after earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over in England. Back at Deutsche Bank Park, where they are unbeaten in this season’s competition, the home side will be quietly confident of progressing.

Eintracht Frankfurt – In control but home form a genuine concern?

Many will have seen the images circulated on social media about Frankfurt’s strong following in London for the first-leg. Goals from Ansgar Knauff and Daichi Kamada ensured the passionate support didn’t return home empty handed, though, sealing a 2-1 win at London Stadium which has them well placed to reach a first European final in 42 years. Yet their recent record in Germany means there is still work to be done.

Although still unbeaten in Europe this term, five home outings would only yield the one victory; a 3-1 success against Olympiacos in the group stage. The other four all ending in draws, a result which would see them through on the night. However, their struggles while hosting hasn’t been confined to this competition, the Eagles having won only once in all competitions in their last ten (D4 L5) at Deutsche Bank Park.

Key Stat: The German side boast a flawless record when winning the first-leg away from home, progressing from all nine ties in UEFA competition in which they were victorious away from homes first time around.

West Ham – Hammers needing another special comeback?

Coming into a second leg needing a positive result isn’t a new concept for West Ham, who failed to register a first-leg victory in either of this season’s knockout rounds ties against Sevilla and Lyon. The Hammers even trailed in the former before staging a comeback, albeit courtesy of a 2-0 scoreline in London, versus the competition’s serial winners, and thrashed Lyon 3-0 in France after the pair had drawn 1-1 in England.

However, a record of four wins from 12 previous European away matches (D2 L6) underscores the size of the task in front of them. The bare minimum needed is a goal and they can take heart from scoring in all but one of their last eight said fixtures. Form-wise though, there are questions marks. Sunday’s 2-1 scoreline at home to Arsenal marked a third successive loss for a side boasting just one win in seven (D2 L4).

Key Stat: A 3-0 win over Lyon in the previous round remains West Ham’s solitary victory inside 90 minutes across their last ten matches (W1 D2 L7) away from home in all competitions, losing six of the last seven.

Eintracht Frankfurt Vs West Ham Betting Advice

While it is clearly advantage the Germans, a record of one win in their last ten here at Deutsche Bank Park suggests this tie is far from done and dusted. Although the hosts, unbeaten in Europe this term which includes four draws and a win in Frankfurt, will surely be supremely confident of securing a positive outcome against a West Ham side that has won only one of their past seven away fixtures in all competitions.

Eintracht Frankfurt Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • After a 2-1 defeat over in England, West Ham must do something they have managed just once in their last eight competitive away games: that being a win (W1 D1 L6).
  • However, Frankfurt have managed to retain their unbeaten status throughout this season’s Europa League campaign. The Germans are W1 D4 as hosts.
  • West Ham have scored at least once in seven of their eight previous away matches in Europe. Meanwhile, both teams scored in five of Frankfurt’s last six home games.

The first-leg featured three goals but could easily have produced more, with both teams combining to hit the woodwork three times. BTTS has now landed in five of the last six matches for Frankfurt and all but one of the past four for West Ham, so another goal-laden encounter seems likely. I’d like to back the Hammers. However, they appear to be running out of steam at the wrong time, losing six of the last seven away.
