Preview: For the second time this season, Freiburg kick-off the weekend’s Bundesliga action in the Friday slot. Christian Streich’s men will hope for a better outcome than in their last such fixture – a 3-1 home loss to Dortmund – when they welcome bottom-of-the-table VfL Bochum to Europa-Park.

Freiburg – Another positive result imminent for Streich’s charges?

In his 400th competitive match in charge at the club, Christian Streich marked it by overseeing a narrow, hard-fought 1-0 win over Stuttgart. Moving Freiburg on to six points from three games (W2 L1). Producing a robust display at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, the side from the Black Forest limited their hosts to zero big chances to bounce back from a 3-1 loss at home to Borussia Dortmund the previous week.

That latter result made it back-to-back Bundesliga home defeats under Streich, having seen his side thrashed 4-1 by Union Berlin in the final home outing of last term. Last losing three on the spin as hosts in April 2018. They lost just four of 17 top-flight home games in 2021-22 (W8 D5) though, and haven’t tasted defeat when hosting this particular fixture in the Bundesliga for going on 22 years (W3 D3).

Key Stat: In 2021-22, only the Bundesliga home games of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig seen more Over 2.5 Goals encounters than those of Freiburg (12 of 17 games, or 71%).

Bochum – Bottom side to continue hemorrhaging goals?

Any confidence in the club staving off Bundesliga relegation for a second successive season have been dealt a devastating blow early doors. After losing each of the first three games, conceding a scarcely believable 12 already to Mainz, Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich, they are currently one of only two sides – the other being Bayer Leverkusen – yet to pick up a point thus far.

If 2-1 and 3-2 defeats to Mainz and Hoffenheim, respectively, reflected competitive showings, last week’s 7-0 drubbing at the hands of the champions was as demoralising as it gets. The club’s heaviest ever loss in the Bundesliga. Stemming the flow of goals will be coach Thomas Reis’ first port of call then. His team have kept one clean sheet in their past 19 league games and conceded multiple goals in each of the last eight.

Key Stat: There have already been ten goals scored in the first-half across Bochum’s first three Bundesliga matches of this season (3 for, 7 against), with all of these contests seeing Over 1.5 First Half Goals.

Freiburg Vs Bochum Betting Advice

Last season saw Freiburg win their home clash against Bochum with room to spare. Racing into a 2-0 lead with just sixteen minutes on the clock, the side of Christian Streich never looked back as they chalked up an emphatic 3-0 win (xG: FRE 2.24 – 0.40 BOC). However, that result was something of a rarity, with Freiburg remaining winless across all five previous home meetings (D4 L1) against Bochum.

Freiburg Vs Bochum – Key Facts:

  • Having lost each of their first two Bundesliga home games against Bochum, Freiburg are currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten spell as hosts in this fixture (W3 D3). Prevailing 3-0 in last season’s corresponding fixture.
  • Freiburg have also made the more encouraging start, taking six points from their opening three league games (W2 L1). Contrastingly, Bochum are bottom of the table after losing all three Bundesliga matches by a combined score of 3-12.
  • There were Over 2.5 Goals in all of Freiburg’s seven previous Bundesliga home games, and each of the past six away from home of Bochum.

On the evidence of what we’ve seen this season, though, there is little doubt Freiburg are deserving of such strong favouritism for this contest. Bochum are rock-bottom (L3), have shipped 12 goals already, and conceded multiple goals in each of the last eight Bundesliga games. So we can probably boost the odds about a home win by adding Over 2.5 Goals, which landed in 71% of Freiburg home matches last term.
