Freiburg – Standards are slipping under Streich?

Having endured a disappointing conclusion to the 2021-22 campaign when pipped to European qualification on the final day, Christian Streich and his team certainly begun the new term with fire in their bellies. However, after navigating the opening ten matchdays without incurring a single loss (W6 D4), Freiburg are in danger of wrapping up the Hinrunde (first half of the German football season) outside the European places.

Wednesday’s goalless draw away to Union Berlin was anything but dull (xG: UNB 2.18 – 1.41 FRB), as both teams slug it out in search of a priceless win. Ultimately though, it was a fifth winless fixture in six (W1 D1 L4) for Streich’s charges, who conceded on more occasions during this period (8) than in the first ten rounds of this season combined (7). They would also lose the last twice here at SC-Stadion (vs Frankfurt and Hoffenheim).

Key Stat: Freiburg didn’t concede more than one goal in nine of the opening ten rounds of this season’s Bundesliga, during which they went unbeaten (W6 D4), but have now done so in four of the last six matchdays (W1 D1 L4).

Bayer Leverkusen – Porous backline hampering top-four push?

This team’s scoring prowess has really come to the fore of late. Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim made it 14 strikes across the previous four matchdays (3.5 per game) and brought them up to 39 in just 16 league games for the season. Only Bayern Munich plundering more so far in 2021-22. But while the attackers continue to do the business at one end of the field, questions are being asked regarding the defenders.

Despite netting more than once in each of the last four league games, Leverkusen only managed to win twice (D1 L1) – squandering separate 2-0 leads at Eintracht Frankfurt (lost 5-2) and at home to in-form Hoffenheim in midweek. Now third, a long way back from Dortmund and Bayern but two points ahead of fifth-place Freiburg, any further slip ups and Die Werkself will end the year outside the Champions League spots.

Key Stat: Patrick Schick scored his 15th and 16th Bundesliga goals of 2021-22 in the midweek draw against Hoffenheim, moving him two behind leading scorer Robert Lewandowski having netted eight times in his last three league appearances.

Freiburg Vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Advice

In the previous four seasons, Freiburg managed one win out of eight (D3 L4) versus Leverkusen who are unbeaten across all four trips to SC-Stadion in this timeframe. And while the goals flown in last season – Freiburg winning 2-1 at BayArena after Leverkusen had triumphed 4-2 in the reverse – encounters between the two do tend to be tight and low-scoring, with all five preceding meetings going Under 2.5 Goals.

Freiburg Vs Bayer Leverkusen – Key Facts:

  • Although they avoided defeat in their most recent outing (0-0 vs Union Berlin), Freiburg enter into the game having lost four of their past six Bundesliga matches – three of these via a 2-1 scoreline.
  • Bayer Leverkusen surged into a 2-0 lead in each of their last two Bundesliga games (vs Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim), but failed to win either time.
  • Freiburg haven’t beaten Leverkusen as the home side in their most recent four attempts (D2 L2), with three of these encounters producing no more than one goal (0-1 once, 0-0 twice).

Only two of the last seven Bundesliga head-to-heads saw one of these teams prevail by more than the odd goal, suggesting another closely-fought contest awaits between sides currently split by two positions and as many points (fifth vs third). Freiburg are coming off back-to-back home defeats, however, they were unbeaten in five here beforehand (W3 D2). Meanwhile, Leverkusen have won only one of their last four away (D2 L1).
