Freiburg – Can Freiburg realise their dream of a first by prevailing in their first ever cup final appearance?

Despite being one of the oldest clubs in German football, Freiburg are not amongst the most prestigious or successful. Since being founded in 1904, they are still looking for a major trophy success. Winners of the 2.Bundesliga on five occasions (the most recent in 2015/16), it shows just how variable their history has been – even in recent times. However, things are looking very positive at the moment.

Christian Streich has been in charge for over a decade and he could be on the cusp of capping off a very successful period for Freiburg with a first German Cup win. They hadn’t even contested a final before this season.

Their cup run started with a narrow 1-0 win away to Wurzburger Kickers back in August – the first of five away ties en route to the final. Osnabruck, Hoffenheim, Bochum and Hamburg have all been eliminated, and there has been drama along the way courtesy of a win on penalties and in extra-time.
Unfortunately, the preparation for this game has not been ideal. Back to back defeats against Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga means they blew a chance of a top four finish and qualification to the Champions League for the first time. Ironically, the team that pipped them to fourth spot is the one they will face on Saturday.

RB Leipzig Preview – Will Leipzig make it third time lucky following defeats in two of the last three seasons?

It has been a season of ups and downs for Leipzig. The appointment of Jesse Marsch was a disaster and he found himself out a job just before Christmas. Domenico Tedesco was tasked with improving the club’s fortunes and a terrific winning run seen them move back into contention for an unlikely top four finish. Despite their own stutters towards the end of the campaign, Leipzig done enough and finished one point above Union Berlin and three ahead of Freiburg.

They now go looking for a first German Cup win of their own, albeit in a much shorter lifespan than their opponents. This will be their third appearance in the final following earlier defeats to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Although Leipzig have had relative success considering their brief history, with second place finishes and regular participation in the Champions League (including a semi-final appearance), there has been no silverware. They seen a major opportunity go by them by losing to Rangers in the last four of the Europa League so will be hoping to make up for that in this competition.

Leipzig got the better of Union Berlin in a titanic tussle in the previous round, eventually winning 2-1 with a goal from club legend Emil Forsberg in added time.

Freiburg vs RB Leizpig Betting Advice

Three points was all that split these two teams over the course of a 34 game league season which suggests there is not going to be much between them in this encounter. That view is further strengthened considering the two meetings in the Bundesliga this season ended in 1-1 draws. Leipzig had won three of the five games before that.

Christian Nkunku is one of the most sought after players in European football following the attacker’s 30 goal season for Leipzig. That includes three strikes in this competition.

Key Facts –  Freiburg vs RB Leipzig Betting Tip

  • Freiburg are competing in their first ever German Cup final in their 118 years history
  • RB Leipzig have reached the final for a third time in four years, losing on the previous two occasions
  • Just three points separated the two teams in the Bundesliga season, in favour of Leipzig

It is all set up for a really intriguing clash where one club will get their hands on this trophy for the first time. Neither were in great form towards the end of the season but Freiburg can use the disappointment at missing out on a top four finish as fuel, in cap off what has been a remarkable season.
