This is one of the highlight matches of the third round of the 2021 World Darts Championship event.

The action picks up after Christman on Sunday with the third round in swing. Here we are looking at a darts betting preview for Gary Anderson v Mensur Suljovic.

Anderson is a former World Champion but he faces a tricky match here against his Austrian opponent for a place in the fourth round.

Gary Anderson Preview – Anderson makes steady progress

Two-time PDC World Champion Gary Anderson has made it through to the third round of the tournament.

He opened the tournament in the second round as he is the 13th seed at the event.

Anderson was up against Latvia’s Madars Razma in the second round and he had little trouble moving through with a 3-1 success.

So that was a comfortable opener for “The Flying Scotsman” who is a slightly narrow 4/6 favourite for the win in this one* (odds recorded 0512 GMT Thursday, 24th December).

We have seen Anderson come back into some nice form this year having reached the Final of the World Matchplay.

He also made the semi-finals of the Premier League Darts and the Masters.

The PDC World Championship wins for the Scotsman happened in 2015 and 2016. He has made it at least the fourth round in his four tries since.

So he is a big player in this field but Anderson likely faces a tricky test against another seeded player in Suljovic.

Our betting prediction:
Anderson 4-2 correct score
10/3

Anderson and Suljovic have met 10 times before so they do know each other fairly well. Anderson holds a 6-4 head to head lead over the Austrian.

But this meeting on Sunday will be the first time that they have met since 2018.

Anderson is on a four-match winning streak against Suljovic and this will be the first meeting between the two in the World Championships.

The bookmakers are leaning towards a narrow win for Anderson and a 4-2 correct score in his favour is at 4/1 in darts betting* (odds recorded 0512 GMT Thursday, 24th December).

Mensur Suljovic Preview – Austrian definitely a threat to Anderson

Mensur Suljovic is the 20th seed at this year’s PDC World Darts Championship and therefore he entered at the second round as well.

He lined up against England’s Matthew Edgar and took a 3-1 win.

There was a big 98 three-dart average from Suljovic in that match up, which was a couple of points better than Anderson’s second-round three-dart average.

So we do expect this third round fixture to be a heavy-scoring one.

In the match outright for darts betting Mensur Suljovic is at 6/5 for the win* (odds recorded 0512 GMT Thursday, 24th December).

“The Gentle” is a well-seasoned player and isn’t going to be overawed by the occasion.

However, looking at his career since 2008 on the PDC, Suljovic has won one major title, that being the Champions League of Darts in 2017.

In that final, he got the better of Gary Anderson.

The best effort in a tournament that he has put together this year was a 6th round effort at the UK Open.

Mensur Suljovic is a player that can stick in there but over this longer format, we don’t see him having the scoring power to take out Anderson.

But this should be an intriguing match and if the Australian gets a strong start then it could really ramp up the intensity.

Suljovic to win the first set is at a quote of even money* (odds recorded 0512 GMT Thursday, 24th December).

Gary Anderson vs Mensur Suljovic Betting Advice

Four of the last five meetings between these two players have actually been pretty tight.

We would suggest that Suljovic is good enough to put a couple of sets on the board.

We can see him starting strongly because of confidence from a high-scoring effort in the last round.

It is harder to see him staying the distance and closing out the match. The longer grind suits Anderson. Suljovic has never made it past the third round in the PDC World Championship in his long career.

Key Facts – Gary Anderson vs Mensur Suljovic Betting Tip

  • Gary Anderson is a two-time PDC World Champion
  • Gary Anderson has won his last three matches against Suljovic
  • Mensur Suljovic has not been beyond the third round at the World Championship

So our first darts betting action is going to be on the 4-2 correct score for Anderson at 10/3* (odds recorded 0512 GMT Thursday, 24th December).

Anderson, even when his season hasn’t gone that well is such a steady and consistent player at the World Championships.

So we are rolling with The Flying Scotsman to book a place in the fourth round. But we will expect it to get over 5.5 sets at 4/6* (odds recorded 0512 GMT Thursday, 24th December).
