Thursday night brings us the first legs of the third qualifying round of the Europa League as the ‘big guns’ enter the final qualifying rounds stages. My first pick features Belgian club, Gent, taking on Austrian side, Altach, at their GHELAMCO-arena.
Gent finished in fourth place in the Belgian First Division A at the end of the last campaign which gained them entry at this stage of this season’s Europa League, and I daresay they’ll be keen to make the most of their home advantage in this first leg, considering last season’s away record on the domestic front.
Gent managed just two away wins all season, so they’ll be looking to get a jump in this first leg. Although they lost 3-2 at home recently to Nice in a friendly, Gent were unbeaten in their six matches prior to that.
Visitors Altach have progressed through to the third qualifying round of the Europa League following an impressive domestic season in the Austrian top flight where they eventually finished in fourth place, but led the league at the mid-winter break.
Altach are no strangers to the Europa League as they participated in the 2015 season, and they’ve already registered wins over Chikhura 2-1 on aggregate in the first qualifying round, and then a 4-1 aggregate win over Dinamo Brest in the previous round.
Altach have also performed well in their four away ties in their short Europa League history as they’ve picked up three wins with victories at Vitoria Guimaraes, Chikhura and Dinamo Brest, but this will perhaps be their biggest test to date on the road in this competition.
