Girona will play their first ever fixture in the Spanish top flight on Saturday evening when they take on one of the best teams in La Liga in the shape of Atletico Madrid, at their Estadi Municipal de Montilivi following promotion at the end of last season.
Girona achieved automatic promotion from the Segunda Division at the end of last season as they finished runners-up to title winners, Levante, despite a 2-1 loss away at Cordoba on the final day. They now have a difficult job of staying in the domestic top flight, as well as having to face last season’s third place finishers in Atletico Madrid in the first game of the season.
It’s likely to be a baptism of fire for the home side but they’re not without their goal threats themselves as they possess forwards Stuani and Kayode, the latter being a new signing from Austria Vienna.
Atletico Madrid finished in their expected position in La Liga at the end of last season, behind the usual suspects, Real Madrid and Barcelona, but they’ll also join the big two in the Champions League this season too.
With this in mind, the visitors will no doubt be keen to get their season off to a winning start as they will be fighting on two fronts for the first third of this new season at least. Striker Gameiro is expected to sit out this season opener due to injury, so Torres and Griezmann are expected to form an early partnership up front.
With no major transfer moves from the Atletico Madrid camp during the summer months, they’ll once again have the same personnel at manager, Simeone’s disposal which could spell early trouble for Girona here.
