Preview: Having emerged as 1-0 victors from their visit to Estadi Montilivi in May, there will be nothing for Tenerife – who finished this season’s La Liga 2 with the best away record in the division – to fear ahead of the first-leg of their play-off final with Girona.

Girona – Emboldened by elimination of Eibar?

Trailing 1-0 from the first-leg, Girona deserve a lot of credit for turning their semi-final with Eibar around. The latter had amassed at least ten points more than the other three play-off members, firm favourites to make this final following their narrow victory in Catalonia. Michel’s Girona side had other ideas, though, putting on a finishing clinic at Ipurua Municipal Stadium to win 2-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.

It was a minor miracle they progressed, though, having been convincingly beaten in ball possession (69% to 31%), shots (22 to 4), shots on target (4 to 3) and even corners (13 to 7). That first-leg marking just a second home loss in seven, winning the other five, and only their sixth in the league across 2021-22 (W13 D3 L6). The only other side to have won here in that time? Yup, you probably guessed it: Tenerife.

Key Stat: Each of the last five home matches for Girona produced no more than two goals, with all five seeing only one team score (W3 L2).

Tenerife – Away record to hold up in first-leg?

No team from Spain’s second tier would earn more away points during the regular season than the 37 of Tenerife in 21 matches (W11 D4 L6), while only Real Sociedad B locked in a larger percentage of their overall points tally from away fixtures. So they’re more than capable of grinding out a result in unfamiliar settings, as was the case in their semi-final with Las Palmas where they actually managed to build on a first-leg lead.

Leading 2-0 at half-time in Gran Canaria, 3-0 on aggregate, the tie was essentially over at that stage. Las Palmas would pull one back but Tenerife were never likely to surrender such a commanding advantage. This, after all, a side that was beaten once all season away from home by two clear goals. Los Chicharreros are an even bigger price away to Girona, despite defeating their hosts 1-0 at this ground in May.

Key Stat: Tenerife wouldn’t finish this season’s La Liga 2 campaign well, losing every one of their final three regular season matches – shipping precisely two goals in each loss –having been unbeaten in six (W4 D2) beforehand.

Girona Vs Tenerife Betting Advice

I, rather inexplicably, opposed Tenerife in the away leg of their semi-final, despite being well aware of their away exploits this season. Having predicted a one-goal defeat at Las Palmas, I knew I was in big trouble once the whistle for half-time had blown with the visitors 2-0 to the good. Luis Miguel Ramis’ team are an even bigger price to take something back to Tenerife from Girona, which is a tempting proposition.

Girona Vs Tenerifa – Key Facts:

  • This season, Tenerife completed a rare league double over Girona as they won both meetings by a solitary goal. After a 2-1 success at home in November, they went and score the only goal of the contest here in Catalonia to win 1-0 in May.
  • It means Girona have one win from their past five encounters against Tenerife, who would emerge victorious from all but one of these games: that being their trip to Girona in May 2021, losing 1-0.
  • There hasn’t been Both Teams to Score in five of the last six head-to-heads, 11 of the last 12 Girona matches and five of the previous six contests featuring Tenerife.

Tenerife would finish above Girona in the final standings, accruing one point more than the side they beat 1-0 at this venue during the regular season. So I certainly wouldn’t discourage anyone from taking the 7/10 available about the visitors avoiding defeat. Instead, at the same price point, I am opposing goals. Both teams scoring occurred only once across Girona’s last 12 matches, and in one of Tenerife’s last six.
