The massively popular Henry Cejudo is one of the headlining acts of UFC 249. This battle against former divisional champion Cruz is the co-main event of the night. The bookmakers are predicting a favourable outcome for Cejudo. But it may not be that easy for him.

Can Cejudo defend his Bantamweight crown?

Olympic Gold medalist Henry Cejudo is back in UFC action on the weekend. He is the reigning bantamweight champion in the UFC. He was also the holder of the flyweight title too before he vacated that earlier in 2020.

Cejudo has won each of his last five fights now. In that sequence of bouts, he faced some of the best in the business as well, which includes Sergio Pettis and Demetrious Johnson.

Stack up the opponents that he has seen off recently and it’s easy to peg Cejudo as a favourite in this one.

Even though he is giving up four inches in height and four inches in reach to Cruz, Cejudo is on the boil at the moment.

Cejudo is an Olympic wrestler. So when this gets to the mat that is going to be an area in which he should excel. He has used that skill in the past.

But he isn’t the greatest at getting his opponents to the match. But then you can also flip that around. Cejudo is one of the most difficult in the business to takedown.

He’s slippery. He’s quick. It’s that superb ability to keep himself out of danger that helps him. But given his career in wrestling, it’s not the greatest tactic to try for opponents to try and take Cejudo down.

The Messenger is 15-2 in his career now, unbeaten as mentioned, in five. He has pulled off a TKO against TJ Dillashaw and Marlon Moraes in his last two bouts, the latter in June last year.

Can Cruz become champion for the third time?

Dominick Cruz can create history on the weekend. He could be the first person ever to win the bantamweight title three times. So why, for one of the most seasoned pros on the circuit, is he the underdog for this one?

The American has been away for a long time. He lost to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207 in December 2016 and hasn’t been seen since.

So this is a massive comeback for him after losing the Bantamweight title to Garbrandt on the night.

He had been scheduled for fights since 2016, but both times they had to be scrapped because of injury. He comes into this one as a stand-in for Jose Aldo.

So it is worth taking a reminder of what Cruz is about.

At his best, you see Cruz in action and he is just so nimble and changes his angle of attack rapidly. So he’s hard for opponents to catch cleanly and he boasts superb defensive stats as well.

He is not a mug at any aspect of the sport. His movement is superb but has never been the most accurate in landing blows. He’s tough to take down and will want to avoid getting put down against Cejudo.

The longer Cruz stands up and keeps this vertical, the better his chance of causing an upset will be. He was a late replacement so perhaps preparations and the time away could work against him. This could go the distance.

Henry Cejudo vs Dominick Cruz Betting Advice

This looks like being an evenly matched fight. Punters are naturally going to have reservations over Cruz. It’s been a long time since he’s been in the octagon.

But he has always been one of the best movers in the sport across any division. He’s smart, hard for opponents to both peg with a shot and to takedown. If he’s anywhere near his best he can trouble Cejudo.

Key Facts – Henry Cejudo vs Dominick Cruz Betting Tip

  • Henry Cejudo is the reigning Bantamweight champion
  • Henry Cejudo has won his last five fights
  • Dominick Cruz hasn’t fought since 2016

This is no easy fight for Cejudo that we can see. He’s giving up height and reach. He could struggle to get Cruz into a position where he wants him, down on the mat.

That will be a problem, but on his feet, he doesn’t move as well Cruz can. That should give the underdog more than a decent shot at this, and at underdog odds, Cruz has to be worth a flutter.
