Preview: It’s an all Berlin affair in round 29 as struggling Hertha Berlin, with six defeats in their last seven Bundesliga outings, seek out revenge for 2-0 and 3-2 losses to Union Berlin in the league and DFB Pokal, respectively, from earlier in the campaign.

Hertha Berlin – Demotion beckons for hapless hosts?

After nine consecutive campaigns at this level, is this the season when The Old Lady make a hasty retreat back to the second tier of German football? Very little about their recent results suggests otherwise. Last week’s 2-1 scoreline in Leverkusen bringing up a six loss in seven for the capital club, who surely need all three points from this weekend’s visit of Berlin neighbours Union to have any chance of defying the drop.

Hertha Berlin have 26 points after 28 games. That is one fewer than 15th-placed Stuttgart and automatic safety, and 15 off a Union Berlin sniffing around the European places in seventh. Moreover, Hertha boast a solitary win from eleven Bundesliga games and hadn’t won for five successive home matches (D1 L4), conceding 18 while scoring just five, prior to thrashing Hoffenheim 3-0 last time out at the Olympiastadion.

Key Stat: There has been three or more goals in five of the past six Hertha Berlin home Bundesliga games, with four of these contests seeing at least five goals scored.

Union Berlin – Can Die Eisernen arrest away slump?

While it isn’t mathematically certain, only a capitulation of epic proportions would see Union Berlin’s Bundesliga tenure not extend into a fourth season. The sweetener this season, however, is they remain on course to finish above their capital rivals for a second time in as many campaigns, having secured seventh place in 2020/21 – the same position Urs Fischer’s side occupy through 28 rounds of this term.

Should they maintain their current trajectory, successive Europe campaigns beckon for a club which hadn’t graced the German top-flight prior to 2019/20. That being said, standards have dropped of late. Last week’s hard-fought home win over FC Koln one of only two across eight previous top-flight fixtures (D1 L5). They’ve not been travelling at all well either, beaten to nil in four consecutive Bundesliga away games.

Key Stat: Union Berlin have averaged well below a goal a game (0.6) across the last eight Bundesliga games, netting no more than once in seven of those encounters and none at all in five.

Hertha Berlin Vs Union Berlin Betting Advice

Second-bottom Hertha Berlin hosts seventh-placed Union Berlin in Saturday’s evening kick-off from the German Bundesliga. It looks like being a tight contest between two misfiring teams; Hertha having found the back of the net no more than once in 10 of the past 11 league games and Union Berlin doing the same in all but one of their last eight. Bookmakers have cottoned on to this, though, with Under 2.5 priced at 4/6.

Hertha Berlin Vs Union Berlin – Key Facts:

  • Union Berlin have won the last two competitive matches between the sides, both this season. However, Die Eisernen are yet to register an away win over their rivals in the Bundesliga, losing 4-0 in 2019/20 and 3-1 in 2020/21.
  • That could all change on Saturday though. Hertha Berlin (W7 D5 L16) sit 17th ahead of this weekend, a full 15 points off Union Berlin (W1 D8 L9) who are in contention for European qualification in 7th.
  • Taiwo Awoniyi netted the opener as Union Berlin ran out 2-0 victors over Hertha Berlin earlier in the season. No Bundesliga player this season has scored the game’s first goal on more occasions than the 24-year-old Nigerian, who has done so seven times.

Union Berlin are yet to register a Bundesliga away win in this fixture, losing both prior meetings at the Olympiastadion by 2+ goals (4-0 & 3-1). However, there can be no doubt momentum has swung towards Saturday’s visitors. Union sit 15 points better off and won the last two encounters between the sides, including here in the cup in January. So at close to evens, I am happy to support The Irons Draw No Bet.
