Pick: Hoffenheim to WIN
Odds: 17/20

(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 5th December 2020)

Preview: Without a Bundesliga win in seven, can Hoffenheim finally return to more prosperous ways in a fixture that has generally treated them very well? Augsburg, who are three points better off, will certainly hope this isn’t the case at Rhein Neckar-Arena on Monday.

Hoffenheim Preview – Wins, and clean sheets, proving scarce?

As it turns out, beating Bayern Munich isn’t the brightest of ideas. Since thrashing the record champions 4-1 at Rhein Neckar-Arena in September to make it back-to-back league wins at the start of the campaign, Hoffenheim (W2 D3 L4) have gone seven outings in the Bundesliga without registering a single victory (D3 L4). There was a reason I specifically mentioned ‘in the Bundesliga’ on this particular occasion too.

While domestic commitments have so far proved too much for Sebastien Hoeness and his team, it has been anything but in Europe, where in this season’s group stage for the Europa League they have strung together a thus far unbeaten, table-topping display in Group L. In fact, Hoffenheim had won all four games, by an aggregate of 13-1, and already qualified by the time of their goalless draw in Serbia last Thursday.

That uneventful stalemate with Red Star Belgrade now means TSG have put together a four-match unbeaten run in all competitions, though only one was a win – 2-0 away to Slovan Liberec. That was also a rare clean sheet; a fourth in Europe having gone the entirety (nine games) of this season’s Bundesliga without one. They’ve only ever had a longer wait for a league clean sheet in 2013/14 (18).

Augsburg Preview – Clear preference for playing on the road?

Since the Bundesliga restart in mid-May of last season, FC Augsburg have accumulated more points when playing away (12 – W3 D3 L2) than at home (9), despite having featured in two more matches at their WWK Arena during this period. On Monday they conveniently head out on the road in the direction of the Rhein Neckar-Arena, where in December of last year they secured a long overdue victory.

Prior to that aforementioned visit, when the now departed Philipp Max netted a couple of goals in their 4-2 triumph, FCA had never beaten Hoffenheim away from home before in the Bundesliga (D4 L4). Now, they are bidding for successive away wins in a fixture that once seemed unwinnable, and the three points would go a long way in helping to consolidate their hard-earned place in the top half of this season’s German top-flight.

Augsburg (W3 D3 L3) sat eighth before Round 10 commenced on Friday with Hertha Berlin’s 3-1 win at home to Union Berlin. The key to their moderate early success has been strong finishes: only Bayern and Dortmund netting more often in the final 15 minutes than Heiko Herrlich’s side, with goals scored in this period accounting for more than half (55%) their overall total and provided an additional eight points.

Hoffenheim Vs Augsburg Betting Advice

Historically, this fixture has offered Hoffenheim plenty of spoils, winning four and drawing four here at their Rhein Neckar-Arena prior to a first-ever home loss to FC Augsburg last season. The visitors put the game to bed with a goal in the 85 minute, that helping to seal a 4-2 victory, and they will fancy their chances of a repeat having scored the majority of their goals this season in the closing stages.

Hoffenheim Vs Augsburg – Key Facts:

  • Since recording successive league wins at the very start of 2020/21, Hoffenheim haven’t recorded a single victory in the Bundesliga in seven matches (D3 L4).
  • Since the Bundesliga resumption in May, Augsburg have registered most of their points during this period away from home (12 vs 8), despite playing two more home games.
  • Four of the last five league meetings ended in victory for Hoffenheim, who were unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga in eight (W4 D4) prior to losing 4-2 last term.

It is important to remember, though, that Hoffenheim would avenge last season’s home defeat by winning the reverse fixture 3-1 on the road. That a fourth head-to-head win in the last five. That, quite frankly, is superiority. Just as important, meanwhile, is TSG coach Hoeness resting the bulk of his first-team for last Thursday’s trip to Serbia, and a refreshed home side could mean it is business as usual against FC Augsburg.
