Inter Milan Preview – Can Conte lead an Inter team to a first European semi-final since 2010?

Antonio Conte knows his team will be playing Champions League football next season but he will be demanding his team go all out to win this year’s Europa League. Conte has been so accustomed to success both as a player and coach but there is a feeling his first season as Inter boss has been an underachievement. That’s despite finishing second in Serie A and a point behind the leaders. The title challenge was something of a damp squib from some months out.

A missed penalty from the Spaniards proving crucial when the score was 1-0.

Conte will hope to build on that and will be aware that tomorrow’s opponents will prove a much tougher test which his players will have to respond to.

Bayer Leverkusen Preview – Are Leverkusen set to make up for their domestic disappointments?

Despite a very strong second half to the season Bayer Leverkusen still came up short both in the Bundesliga and the German Cup. A stumble towards the end of their league campaign proved crucial as they finished fifth and therefore missed out on qualifying for the Champions League. A heavy defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal compunded their frustration and means all their attention is on Europe and attempting to compete in next season’s Champions League by virtue of winning this.

Like Inter, they fell into the Europa League having finished third in this season’s Champions League and have taken full advantage thus far.

Two-legged ties against Porto and Rangers could have been challenging but Leverkusen have been imperious – winning all four matches. The two away performances – where they won 3-1 on both occasions – have been particularly impressive and is the sort of level they will require if they are to progress past the Serie A giants.

It’s hard to get away from the attention and coverage of their star player Kai Havertz future. It’s expected he will leave this summer but his inclusion in the second leg against Rangers implies he will be used to boost Leverkusen’s chances of winning this.

The winners of this tie will face either Shakhtar Donetsk or Basel in the semi-final and will be big favourites to reach the showpiece. Inter have hit good form at just the right time for this and may have the added experience to edge past Leverkusen.
