Simona Halep hits Melbourne in a positive mood
Things are looking good for Simona Halep ahead of this year’s Australian Open challenge. Last year at the event she was battling to come back from injury and had no coach. This time she is healthy, this time she has returned to the services of Darren Cahill as coach. He was working with her when Halep reached the 2018 Australian Open final.
They were together when she won the French Open that year, Halep’s first Slam title. So that’s good omens for her. This is not the easiest of opening fixture for her however. For her build up to Melbourne Park, Halep entered the Adelaide International earlier this month.
The former world number one beat Ajla Tomljanovic in her first round, then fell to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter finals. The 28 year old has had two first round exits at the Australian Open in her last four appearances there. You would expect her to win match like this, but this could be a grind against a confidence player.

Battling Brady will make Halep work
Brady is ranked 49th in the world and the American has had an enjoyable start to the new year. She opened her year at the Brisbane International where she battled back from losing the opening set to beat Maria Sharapova in a final-set tiebreak. That was some wonderful battling qualities which she showed there.
There was better to come from her as well as she took out world number one Ahsleigh Barty in the second round. In straight sets. So despite falling in the next round to Petra Kvitova, that improvement to dump Barty out, would have done wonders for Brady. It also raises the caution levels a bit for Halep in this opening fixture.

Brady has had a couple of notable results this season already. But then couldn’t sustain her levels in Brisbane. She’s a good young player, but the experience of Halep has to be backed.
