Playing in New York this week, Konta has impressively powered her way through to the semi finals.

In the final four, she will meet former Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka who has shown some resurgent form in New York.

There has been great progress from British Number One Johanna Konta in New York this week.

Konta opened her account at the Western & Southern Open by hammering Kirsten Flipkens 6-2 6-0.

That set her up with a tricky match against former three-time Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva.

In this fragmented year of tennis, those were two of the players who had produced some of the best form for 2020 from what action had been played.

But once again Konta looked fully in control, dominating her own serve and moving around the court well to beat the Russian.

Then it was a wait for her to see who she would meet in the quarter finals, either Serena Williams or Maria Sakkari.

 

It was Sakkari who fought back from the brink of defeat to upset Williams, to move ahead to face Konta.

So that was a player in top confidence and form that Konta faced in the last eight, but Konta handled it against the Greek power-hitter.

Konta looked composed, was mixing up her shots and again she looked rock solid on her service games.

Now she heads into this semi final match against Victoria Azarenka as the 4/7 favourite not having dropped a set in New York* (odds taken 00:49 GMT, Thursday 27th August).

The head to head between Azarenka and Konta is only a limited one as this will be just the fourth match between them.

Konta does hold a 2-1 head to head lead from singles meetings (Azarenka retired from one), the British player winning the most recent meeting back in 2018, dropping just four games.

But Azarenka looks to be enjoying herself back on the court. She hadn’t won a match this year before this tournament.

It was, to be fair, only the two matches that she had played prior to this.

The former Grand Slam champ hasn’t been anywhere near her glory days for a couple of years now.

But the Belarusian will be happy with her progress in New York at the moment.

In the quarter-finals of the tournament she stopped the march of Ons Jabeur in a straight-sets victory.

To get to that quarterfinal match up, Victoria Azarenka saw off Donna Vekic, Caroline Garica and Alize Cornet at the event.

Like Konta, she hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament. She was really challenged hard by Jabuer in the first set of their quarter-final, however.

There were nine set points between the two of them there in the opening set, so Azarenka was giving up chances.

But she showed some great grit and took out one of 2020’s form players, so can she do the same to eighth seed Konta?
